Trying to find the best placement for my 5.1 surrounds. I wanted to mount both the LR and RR speakers on the side walls about 2ft above the listening position on couch. I am concered about the distance between the speakers. I was thinking I could tweek the reciever settings to make it work.

my set up was almost the same (move the couch closer to the right)

i set the distance on my hd-dvd player. then i listened to my speaker test tone. i just increased the db of the furthest one to make up the distance.

you could go to radio shack and buy a sound level meter, bring it home, and set them to match exact.

then bring back the meter..

When you calibrate your receiver for dB levels and delay (distance) you will be just fine.
