Recently got a new USB headset and i'm getting distortion on certain songs, how do i know if it's the song quality or the headsets fault? I've tried plugging the USB into different ports and playing the music but i still get it, it also only happens at 70-100% volume.

Try a different headset!

Try turning the volume down!

I tried a 3.5mm headset and i think i could hear the distortion the quality on it is really poor so it's hard to tell. I also did turn the volume down with  the headset controls and it makes no difference.

That suggests that the fault is the source.  Typically, headphones (and speakers) distort more at high volume than at low volume, so if the distortion is the same in both cases, it is probably the source rather than the headphones (or speakers).

Well the distortion completely disappears when i lower my computer volume so i guess i'm in the clear when it comes to the headphones? i don't have to worry about replacing them?

Yep. To maximize SNR, have the computer volume as high as you can get it without distorsion, then control the volume with the headest.

Thanks a lot for the help guys! I have one last small question. My other laptops HDD fried a while back and i finally replaced it and installed a fresh windows/updated all my drivers, when i listen to music on it through the speakers i also get distortion even when audio is low, could this be just old/busted speakers? i think it might of happened when i had it stored away.

The speakers in most laptops are driven by much the same circuits as the headphone jack. The headphone jack provides a means for bypassing the laptop's speakers and can be used for testing to shed light on this issue.
