Next-generation DVD recorder solutions from LSI integrate MPEG-4 and DivX(R) Pro encoding and decoding to increase the number of hours of video that can be recorded to a single optical disc. DMN-8604/54 products also feature LSI DVFX(TM) processing technologies for visibly superior video quality, and YesVideo's YesDVD software for easy dubbing and indexing of personal video content.

Boy if They could bring to market something that could record to HDD as Divx or Mpeg4. And Then in Turn convert to Mpeg 2 and Burn to DVD. That would be Sweet. Divx files are about a Quarter the Size of a DVD file are'nt they?

Lots more HDD space :)

High Definition compression is based on MPEG4 from what I've read. As is DivX etc.

MPEG4 is definitely smaller than MPEG2 for the same picture quality and resolution and duration. 4x sounds about right.
MPEG 2 video DVDs someday will seem are archaic as audio CDs are today. I even think optical media will be out of fashion in a few years. Media won't need to be round.

That's certainly the case today - I actually view a good deal of video on my Palm TX using square form factor SD flash memory cards containing Divx encoded video. I can fit around four Divx encoded feature length films on a single 2GB SD card.

That would mean the material on the DVD would have been encoded and decoded twice and therefore the quality would be almost certainly be poorer. But it would make a lot of sense for a HD recorder using HD-DVD or BluRay media.
