Does anyone have a suggestion for a good Divx codec?

Either way, check out doom9.net as they have a lot of comparisons.
I have had trouble viewing some video I downloaded.

Each video has the word divx either in the title or in the file name.

Windows media player goes out to net to try to find a codec but fails.

It's a little old, but I prefer the picture quality of DivX ;-) (DivX 3) to any other codec. DivX 4 and 5 are grainy in comparison, and though they're both easier to use with VirtualDub, it's not enough of an advantage to sacrifice the better picture quality of DivX ;-).
