I have never attempted to build my own cables but I think I might like to learn how.

Would someone please tell me just exactly what I would be getting myself into.

What I need is a complete 101 course, everything from necessary equipment, instructions on how to use them, the best places to purchase tools and product, etc..

Please lay it on me so I can decide if it's worth the time and effort and of course money as opposed to just buying ready-made product.

How many cables are you making?

The biggest issue is the cost of the tooling. GOOD tooling can be in the neighborhood of $100-$200. If you're making several sets of cabling, it can be well worth the cost. If you're only doing 1 or 2, it's tough to justify.

You can as easily solder the connectons with good RCA's as you can, crimp if your handy with a soldering iron.

Some links....First off, the granddaddy of all cable sites...I'll link you straight to the cable section. Jon Risch tests all kinds of cables for interconnects..

Here's some sites on making cables. Some are the crimp style and some are solder..

That crimper is expensive..so here's another place that explains how to use the Paladin crimper...The site is down right now but it's a popular site so check back.

I don't have time to put up a link, but using RG59 or RG6 with SNS compressed connector for F connect or RCA is another way to go if you don't want to crimp or solder. Price for crimper and connector are also not as expensive if you know where to by. I get mine from Ebay.
