been searching and searching for a resonable way to move my projector back 3 feet without making my screen size bigger. I've moved recently and my ceilings are lower & my projector is ceiling mounted.... i've hit it with my head once already....

my projector is a panny ae-500

Crazy idea here, just hook up the projector to a computer and shrink the dvd image on the computer so it just fits the screen on the wall. It should work when you "full screen" the image so you don't see anything else but the movie. Then no lens is needed. Not perfect, but better than nothing and might actually work quite well!

You can try a telephoto adapter lens, the kind that you add on to digital cameras. Just make sure that the lens is large enough for your projector or else you will see tunnelling (vignetting or clipping of the image).

You must also consider the magnification.

Ex. 1.5x will allow you place the projector 1.5x times further from your current position while still keeping the same size image. If this overshoots your requirement (image to small) then you can then play with the projector's zoom to fill in the rest. So it is better to choose a lens that makes the image smaller than one that just makes it fit, it allows for more possibilities.

Note: you can find 1.5x telephoto lens (greater than 50mm) for under $20.

Any clues on where to find a large telephoto adapter. The only ones that I'm running across are 37 mm. I found a Canon 52 mm. However, the threads are 57 mm but the rear lens is still 37 mm. I see Raynox makes some larger ones. Any clues?

saw a kenko krt20 with 58 mm rear thread.... 57mm could be "tough" as 58 mm was a "standard" for a lot of camera equipment. Perhaps a step up / step down ring might help. Having said that, hopefully, you can find something that you can try and take back if it doesn't work. The reason that I say this is, my "findings" indicate that you need to position the adapt so that the image passes as close to the center as possible to avoid distortion. For projectors (most but not all but particularly those with an offset), the image comes out of the front lens element "off-center". Thus, you will need to place the adapter "off-center" a bit and hence will not be able to use the existing lens threading on the projector lens system... at least that was my "finding".

Sorry Budwich, the 57 was a typo. It was actually a 52. The problem was the rear lens was really a 37 mm. I need to find one that has at least a 43mm rear lens so it does not block the light path on my Z1.

just saw this on gizmodo. it's a 12x telephoto lens with a special mount that holds it in front of the lens of a digital camera. it looks like the mount screws on the bottom of a digital camera's tripod mount and then has adjustments for sliding the lens forward/backward and up/down so you can position it right in front of camera's lens.

it's not too expensive, but that's a lot of zoom. it's also probably not a big enough lens. but I like the mounting idea, something like that might be adapted to use the normal telephoto adapters with projectors that don't have mounting threads (like my Z2).
