I have been looking for some outdoor grade speakers. So far all I have found are some waterproof "marine" speakers at parts express.
Pyramid marine 6 1/2" speakers

What I plan on doing is making some fiberglass enclosures to resemble rocks and putting them outside. Already have speaker wire to desired locations. Should not be too difficult to make the enclosures, I can use actual rocks as molds even.. doesn't have to be perfectly smooth like a normal fiberglass enclosure because it is supposed to look like a rock.. (not a river rock, har har) :)

Anyhow to make a long post short, does anyone else know where I can get marine/outdoor speakers for a project like this? And how do you think those pyramid speakers rate vs. costco outdoor rock speakers?

You did not look very hard at Parts Express, because they also have about 20 or 30 other various options for waterproof/outdoor use speakers.

You also need to use, outdoor, indoor/outdoor, waterproof, and weatherproof. As the search options to see them all.

There are also plenty of 'rock' speakers on the market.

If I were doing some DIY outdoor speakers I'd be highly tempted to play with concrete. Some links:

Ray, Thanks for all of the links. I am sure that they will be useful to everyone.

I was talking with someone I used to work with, and he has two set's of concrete equipment racks in his basement that he built. They are great for holding up the gear, but will have to be left with the house if he ever sells it. They are jsut too heavy to move.

What about some outside speakers that you just mount on a wall by your deck? I like the DIY thought, but am not looking for a "rock"

I believe there are outdoor wall sconces that contain speakers.

See, personally I have no desire to hide them. They just need to be loud and unharmed by rain. if angled down.

In that case, just pick out you favorite, high value kit project and after you build the box, completely cover it in fiberglass marine resin, available at your local boat supplies outlet, or in auto/body repair section of an auto parts store (fiberglass kits), or check out the magazine "woodenboat" - they've got tons of resin resources advertising in there. Doing a search on yahoo shopping using the above keywords will also yield a plethora of resin suppliers. After sanding, apply color of your choice to make them look pretty. Just be sure that any ports face down and away from sky, and avoid any kind of drivers that use paper as a base material. Stick with polyproph's, fiberglass or kevlar type drivers for moisture resistance. Have fun...

Perhaps it isn't a concern where you live, but I'd be reluctant to have ported boxes in exterior speakers for fear of hornets or wasps nesting there. Just use a sealed box design and that concern is eliminated...

...easily remedied with the addition of some fine screen material over the port. Won't hurt anything soundwise, but will keep out the insect riff-raff... ;)
