Hey all,
I’m new to the forum and diy audio world.
Recently I decided I wanted to build a tapped horn for my home theater room I’ve also just recently built in the basement. My original plan was to use some old (like 11-15 years old) car audio subs I had laying around from when I was 16. Jl audio 12w0-8. So I stumbled around the internet looking for 12” tapped horn plans. I seen lilmikes builds pop up everywhere but couldn’t find much for a 12” sub and I don’t have the space for a refrigerator sized box (Haha).
Enter the cubo12. The cubo looked a little different than most tapped horns I’d seen with regards to the chamber the sub fires into, it seemed larger. Where most the tapped horns fired into a very small chamber.
So I built the box using Baltic birch plywood and PL for glue. I used a plate amp out of an old energy sub I picked up for like $30.
When I tested the box I noticed I was getting a weird rattling noise. The sound seemed like it was mechanical so I swapped out for my other 12w0-8 I had laying around, still made the same noise. At that point I figured maybe it was because they were so old and not in the greatest shape. Yesterday I ended up going out and buying a new Rockford Fosgate P1 to put in the box. I got it all mounted last night and tested it out....same thing! I’m at a loss as to what would be causing this noise. Would an air leak cause this? Maybe the amp? Or is this box just trash? Any help would be appreciated.

seal between the driver and box is the likely culprit. you may be running into excursion issues early as well. think the cubo12 is tuned higher, like 45hz and originally designed for pro-audio.

So I felt around the seal while letting it play and found air escaping around the mounting holes (I’m a dummy)! So I siliconed all the holes and waiting to try again. Is there a box that would be more appropriate with the P1/home theater use? The reason I wanted a tapped horn was because my basement is open and the area is quite large.

Any idea where a guy might find something like that? I’️ve done a few searches but not coming up with much.

Thank you. I did see that post earlier, I couldn’t find much other than the outer dimensions though. I guess a guy would have to kind of look at the pictures and go off that.
However, seeing how I purchased the P1 yesterday, I’d be more apt to use that sub. Also considering that my two jl’s are in pretty rough shape.
I’ve tried to look at the modeling software I’ve seen mentioned on this site but it seems it’s all made for windows based computers. All we have is a MacBook for a computer, so not much help.
