DLP Bulbs

Hello,

I'm in the market to buy a DLP. How long are bulbs supposed to last until you have to replace them. According to the LG website, the life expectancy is 8000 hours, which isn't even a year, if watching television 24 hours a day. Any thoughts and information would be helpful. :)

^ Do you really watch 24 hours of TV? Say 5k hours in bulb life expectancy-- say roughly 8 hours a day, that's 56 hours a week and about 2900 a year... so actually 2 years give or take a few hours.
of course your mileage may vary YMMV :)

Yeah, hard to believe you need the TV on 24 hours a day.

Some people end up having to replace every year or so, but a lot of people go 2 or 3 years, between bulb changes.

When I made DLP decision, I simply checked out the cost of the bulb. The bulb for my TV is just over $200, so I don't think it is too bad to replace that every couple years (give or take). Especially when I consider choosing DLP over other technologies saved me a lot of money up front and when the bulb is replaced, the TV is just as good as day 1, unlike plasma and LCD that slowly deteriorate over time.

In a few years the plasma owners are going to wish they could restore their picture quality for only $200!

In a few years? Some may wish it now. But in reality, in a few years we will have technology beyond plasma or possibly even projection displays. No one is going to be too concerned about 200 dollar lamps.
Have a buddy well into year 3 on an older Sammy DLP with original bulb...he probably does like normal people do....avergae over the course of year 4-6 hrs per day.

8 hours even seems high...as some days you watch an hour, others 8, but I would guess most fall (or I would hope, 3-6 per day)...If not, you need to turn the damn thing off and get out...

I doubt that, most plasmas will go many many many years under normal viewign conditions before noticeable dimming..

Plasma owners dont have to worry about all the moving parts breaking down in a DLP set....

Other than the poll, there is only misinformation on that thread.
