The other day a salesmen told me at the local A/V store that DLP chips are only produced by TI and that they own virtually all of the patents surrounding DLP technology. He stated that others have "engines" but that TI is the only chip manufacturer. I have a hard time believing that, and seem to remember others developing the chips as well. Is he correct?
Yes, TI is the only manufacturer of the basic DMD chips. Everybody who makes a DLP projector buys the chips from TI.
There are a large number of patents on this technology, many of which are quite current.
I understand that the DLP manufacturing process is also quite tricky. So far, no one has attempted to license the technology from TI to actually manufacture the chips, preferring just to incorporate TI's chips into other products.
LCD and LCoS technologies have multiple vendors.
