DLP Finalists

2502 Views 25 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  tjk
I've narrowed my seemingly endless search for a 50" DLP to these three: Samsung 5063, Mits 52725 and Toshiba 46HM94 (52HM94 won't fit, thanks to side speakers).

Is there a clear winner here? Most of my watching will be DVDs, sports, and the Daily Show of course.

Thanks.

A few questions that may help folks provide better advice:

Do you plan on getting in to HTPCs?

Do you need a built in (ATSC) Tuner?

Is your viewing room often brightly lit?

How wide is the spot you want to fill?
The Sammy's HD3 chip offers a slightly softer picture that is more forgiving of the flaws in a less-than-perfect signal. For DVDs and SDTV, it gets the nod.

For pure HD goodness, go with the Mits. Nothing wrong with the Tosh, but it's got side speakers, a smaller screen and is a little less user-tweakable.

I watch a lot of DVDs and a fair amount of sports in both SD and HD. Love my Samsung 5063W. Tweaked with Avia or DVE, it's a fine all-round performer.
Just make sure to look carefully at the Mits (many have complained it has too much glare, and have returned it - not a good choice if you have a room with a lot of light).

The answer to your question is simple: go to the store, see which you like best with your own eyes, and go with that one! They are all excellent sets, and nobody here can tell you which you will like best.
Thanks for the opinions.

Some added factors, thanks to Quill:

1) I won't be using the DLP as a computer monitor.

2) I'll likely be using an Adelphia HD box (unless someone wants to convince me that DTV is clearly better).

3) Glare in the room is a factor.

4) Allowable width is 53", tops.

Also, if I don't see raimbows in the store, does that pretty much mean I am not susceptable to them?

1) I asked this because one of the cool features the Sammy brings to the table is first-rate HTPC connectivity...and the Toshiba has the worst.

2) Then I would look toward sets without the built in tuner (if cost is an issue). The Toshiba XXXX94 series have built in tuners.

3) Mits aren't available in Canada, so I haven't seen one, but many people here have posted complaints about the reflections from the Mits screen.

4) With limited width, you may want to hold out for the thin-bezeled Samsung 5674. 56" screen size in ~50" width...

Hope that helps...

If you spend some time in a few stores and do not see rainbows, then you're probably OK. Nobody in my family, and nobody visiting, has ever seen a rainbow with my Sammy DLP. We don't purposefully look either, and we don't move our heads around quickly like idiots trying to see them. We just sit back and enjoy the great PQ.
If you don't see rainbows and don't have any problems with removing the glare screen(if glare is an issue), the Mits is the best DLP, period. The Mits picture looks less digital (fake) than the other DLP's, more like CRT.
"Mits aren't available in Canada, so I haven't seen one, but many people here have posted complaints about the reflections from the Mits screen."

Go to Seattle, Detroit or Buffalo and get one.:)

:p Road trips are fun, but somehow I don't think it's worth the 14 hour drive to Seattle to look at a TV that appears to require removal of its screen to be watchable, and has no warranty/repair coverage in Canada. ;)

That's why its so good to live in the great ole U.S of A, because you can purchase the best DLP on the planet and don't have to settle for a second class set because you live in Canada. Good place to go if you are trying to escape the draft, but not to get a DLP:)
The best advice I can give is to NEVER buy a set unseen. Many here have posted that they have returned their Mits due to the glare problem or the tilt problem (sorry auditor, but not everyone shares your opinion). Plus, some have stated that removing the screen from the Mits gives it a very unfinished look. Stick with sets you can actually test drive, and go with whatever looks best to your eyes (nobody else can tell you what you will like best).

Somehow I think that if the Mitsubishi was indeed the "best DLP on the planet," there wouldn't be near as much discussion going on here.

And I'm not going to bite on your Canada Vs. USA troll. Suffice it to say we're both happy to live in the country we each reside in.

Easy dude, just joking really!! I'm sure Canada is a great place. I've always dreamed of about going to Vancouver. I'm sure many who have purchased DLP's from manufacturers are happy with their sets.

Unfortunately for them you are right, not everyone can see the light:)

I agree w/ the above and would add the following:

Make sure to consider the content that you will be watching vs. what you see in the showroom. I ended up seeing a difference in how DLP set's handled motion/sharpness. I ended up selecting the Tosh 62hm84 over Sammy(3rd) and Mits (2nd-minus screen shield). What is most important is what makes you comfortable to look at vs. our opinions. Thus Billb's point - Go see the set's in person, then you will know..Best of luck

Thanks for all the help, everybody. BTW...another forum says that Samsung has abandoned the XX74 DLP models and will go directly to the XX77 models in March '05.

Anybody have any up to date info on this??

No one knows that. The last word from Samsung's US director of marketing for DLP sets was that there would be "74" models but not "77" models. When then do have a built in tuner they are supposed to get a different name.

Anything is possible but it's "most" likely the "74" models are going to show up in November. If so they should be getting on the boats any time now. ;)

There is nothing world beating about them so unless you have to fit one into a tight spot it's not a big deal.

Here's my 2 cents....

I purchased a Mitsubishi 62725...(Actually bought a 52725 and decided it wasn't big enough :D ). I LOVE this set. My room is extremly bright (Family room with sliding glass door, 11' ceilings, and 2 skylights). Glare was a major consideration but also had to be balanced with picture quality and brand quality. I was replacing my 10yr old Mitsubish VS-5078 which served me well (3 kids and waaaay too much 'Barney' to think about). It was starting to die and I wasn't going to put money into fixing it. I liked the fact that Mitsubishi had built in HD tuner, Cablecard, netcommand, inputs 'out the wazoo', Awesome Mitsubishi Light engine, etc.

When I first went to look, I saw the Mitsubishi 52525 next to a Samsung Dlp. Samsung was nice...but to me 'fake' looking. Way too bright. I actually had almost made up my mind for a Sony 60" XBR LCD, when I starting hearing about the Mitsubishi 725 series. One trip to a smaller A/V shop to see a quality picture on the 725 sold me.

Everyone is going to have opinions and favorites. Some people swear by "proscan" . For me it was picture quality and Mitsubishi reputation. Plus also the no interest, no payments till Jan 2006 sold me that I could "get it NOW".

Anyway...good luck and make sure you clearly understand the return/exchange policy of wherever you buy from if your truely torn.

Thanks

Andy
