Didn't Texas Instruments invent the DLP back in the late 1970s? Dosen't that mean that their patent on DLP technology has expired and some Korean or Japanese company could compete with them to reduce the price?

There are a boatload of patents and many pending to get to the modern DLP. Therefore, there won't be a competitive second source anytime soon. Also, have you done your DLP homework? It's far more complicated to FAB DMD chips than than to produce LCDs or CRTs. A newer technology like ThinCRT or something currently unannounced or not invented is more likely to replace DLP than for someone else to come out with a competitive DMD based product.

There will soon be a number of LCoS projectors on the market (other than JVC DILA) that have fill factor as good as DLP, probably better colors, and definitely higher resolution. They will be larger, but not necessarily more expensive. DLP may not have much competition in the road warrior market, but the HT market will go elsewhere, IMO, if TI doesn't put out higher res chips at better prices.

The term ThinCRT means nothing. It is merely a marketing term to describe one manufacturers product. Call it what it is and you will find out alot more about it... FED (field emission display)
