If you get a DVD with the widescreen flag set, the machine knows (because you have told it) what the aspect ratio of your television is, and if it's 4"3, it will letterbox the output, but if it's 16:9, it will use the full screen with the proper aspect ratio. For content without the flag, you have to adjust the television manually.

DMR-E80h TV Settings in setup
I just got a Panny Plasma. I noticed in the manual for my DMR-e80 that you can change the aspect settings on the recorder. I changed it from 4-3 to 16x9 420 P
but I don't see any difference. What is the purpose of changing the settings? Do I see no differnce because my Panny Plasma is overriding the settings?
