Hi all-

I recently acquired a Compaq MP1600 1-chip DLP projector, although I love the smooth detailed picture, I've discovered that I am definitely sensitive to the rainbow effect. I currently have a Da-Lite high power screen (gain 2.8), and I'm wondering if switching to a matte screen (gain 1.0) would help reduce the rainbow effect. Has there ever been any correlation made between screen gain and rainbow effect?

Thanks-

Dave

I don't know about any definitive studies, but I know from personal experience that when I moved from a white screen to a gray screen I noticed the rainbow a lot less. Rainbow is worst with bright, glarey whites against dark backgrounds. Reducing the intensity of the whites helped.

I imagine you'll find the same thing going from a high-gain screen to a lower-gain screen.

hi Dave,

Maybe you could try hanging a plain bedsheet in front of the screen and watch a movie clip that displays the rainbow effect very obviously.

If it seems less obvious, then going to a lower gain could improve your viewing pleasure.
