Do I need a new dvd player?

347 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  jdcrox
I already ordered my new reciever, subwoofer, and speakers for my HT. But while browsing the manual for reciever, it says to connect dvd player to reciever with digital coax or optical. My dvd player only has red, white, yellow. Does this mean to get the full audio affect, I need to get a new dvd player with digital output? Thanks

It seems that way. Perhaps a specific model might be helpful to determine for sure...
I ordered the Pioneer 1015. And my dvd player is an old Panasonic, but it says dolby digital on the case. But like I said it only has left right and video out. What is a good dvd player to buy that I will be happy with for a long time?
Your dvd player must have either digital fiber optic or digital coax to pass digital discrete multichannel sound.

It could be just a really cheap (or old) unit. I've seen DVD players that have composite video out only.
If the DVD player says Dolby Digital, it should have a digital out. It may have an optical output which does not look like an RCA type output that you're familiar with. An optical output may even have a plug in it that needs to be removed or it may have a little flap on it which would make it smooth with the back of the DVD player's panel so you might not notice it. Look for any writing on the back alluding to "Digital or Optical output" if you can't find the manual in your house or online at the manufacturer's website. If not you're out of luck.

If it comes down to having to buy a new DVD player. This is the worst time to do so as a brand new technology is around the corner (due sometime in 06) that will replace DVD. Blu-ray and HD DVD are the competing formats and if you could buy just the cheapest DVD player now w/ Dolby Digital and the functions you want I'd recommend doing so to tide you over. Don't spend a lot of $ now as it will be obsolete in months, not yrs.
Yeah, I would not spend much on a DVD player right now. There have been enough advancements that even one of the inexpensive Toshiba or Samsung DVD players probably would blow away your older Panny.
What model is your DVD player? I have never heard of a DVD player without a digital out. And I bought one of the first models to come out, the Toshiba 3006. (Which I still have as a backup, and works fine).
