So I bought a new tv and a blu-ray player. Before I had the old DVI hdtv.

Anyway about 4-5 years ago I got me a nice Harman Kardon AVR 325 which had the 7.1 and all that jazz. Now this player has no HDMI, it has 2 optical which I use.

Now am I missing out on anything new? Right now I just use the HDMI for video, and connect the optical up for audio. Do the new receivers with HDMI offer better sound, or surround modes that I will miss out on? If I were to replace this receiver, what would be a good alternative to my AVR 325?

You are missing very little.

You are missing out on lossless audio, but that's not a huge deal because lossy audio is so good. And, lossy Blu-ray audio is even better than DVD lossy audio.

The stickied AVR FAQ covers lossless audio.

Correct, you are missing out on lossless audio, which is indistinguishable from high(er) bitrate lossy audio on lower end (sub $2000) speaker systems in my experience.

With Blu-ray, you can get 640kbps Dolby Digital or 1.5mbps DTS over optical, which is a substantial upgrade over SD-DVD.
