Do I need a subwoofer with 2 floor standing speakers(klipsch)?

3813 Views 11 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Mike Garrett

I am thinking of setting up a 5.1 speaker setup in my bonus room. I am planning to buy 2 floor standing speakers along with 2 bookshelf speakers and a center channel speakers..

Klipsch floor standing speakers.

My room size is approx : 14 * 25 ft

I am not sure if I really need a subwoofer. I assume floor standing speakers produce enough bass.. Am I right? Can someone advise?

Need? No. Would you benefit from adding one? Yes.

Enough, yes but compared to a subwoofer, not a chance. You can get away with not having a subwoofer for music, for but movies you need a subwoofer
For music even my RB-81 II produce enough bass. In movies they pack enough punch, but I would miss all the deep bass that even floorstanders can't play. Since you're obviously building a home theater don't avoid nor skimp on the subwoofer. Before you know it you'll want two subs.
I have a similar size room with larger Klipsch speakers and I'd say you would definitely not regret the subwoofer purchase. In fact, I just started running dual subs and that was a huge improvement over a single sub.
A sub is almost a must-have for the dedicated LFE channel even if your front speakers are full-range.
Not just for the LFE channel but also other low bass including with music. I saw the necessity of a sub back in the early '80s when it was far from the norm. It lends weight to music and lessens the load on both speakers and amplifiers by band limiting the main speakers.
Sure, but nobody had even mentioned the LFE channel yet.

I agree.

Especially if your room has very high ceilings or opens into other rooms. Both towers and even a small sub would have trouble producing bass in a big space.

Does your room open up to other rooms?

Its a closed room with 9 ft ceiling..
A better way to pose your question is:

1. Do I need subs?

If your intent is for music only, probably not, unless you like to listen at high levels. For HT subs are a necessity.

2. If I have subs do I need floor stander mains?

No. Put the money you save by getting book shelves into a pair of good subs.
Sent you a PM.
