Do I need floor standers?

I recently scored a Polk TSX150C center channel speaker for a great deal, so I now need to upgrade my LR speakers. I currently have a set of Onkyo satellites from around 2005. They were part of an HTIB set and they have a 3" driver and small tweeter.

I have 4 of these matching speakers in an 18x12 room with an opening into an 8ft dining area on the left side of my listening position, and a 10ft hallway to the bedrooms behind it.This is the main living area in a fairly small apartment. I also have a Sony SA-W2500 subwoofer currently crossed over at 110hz.

My question is, do I actually NEED floorstanders, or would I be OK with book shelf speakers. I was looking at the TSX110s for bookshelves or the TSX330s for towers.

My usage case is 85% movies/tv/games and the rest music.

Pound for pound you'll get more for your money in standmounts/bookshelf. However in larger rooms where you want stereo speakers reproducing more of the frequency range, and less from the sub, I'd go for floorstanders, and when 2 channel music is a priority. That means spending more though.

Don't discount second hand, I just bought a pair of large standmount speakers for £125. They retailed at £900 ($1500 US)

For movies having standmounts which reach 80hz are fine.

Ok, so since I have a small listening area, I should be fine with bookshelves. Now my question is, will I be alright having them about 5 ft high when my center channel is below my TV about 2 or 3 ft off the ground?

Only if you don't have subs.

No problem, though there's no reason why the center has to be below the screen, or why the screen has to be that low to the ground. You'll get best results with identical L/C/R. For that matter you could use TSX150C for the L/R, vertically placed. It will work better vertically as a center as well.

Im kind of limited in placement as I'm in a small apartment. The TV is mounted to one of those entertainment center shelves with the lcd Mount built in. The top most shelf is where the center sits, it's about waist height. It blasts right into my face when I'm sitting down.

I was going to go with the TSX because they are available locally.

You will be fine with Polk TSx100b or Polk TSx220b. Your subwoofer although a budget model it will be able to handle the bass frequencies.

Yeah, it's budget and small, but it handles bass much better than any previous subwoofers I've had, which were a passive 7" from an RCA HTIB and a powered 8" ported from Onkyo.
