Do I need lens shift? Or maybe just a different projector?

Okay, so I purchased an Epson 2030 as my first projector, and it's not working out.

Here's the setup in the basement - ceiling is 9'8" tall, I would like the projector ceiling mounted 11-12' away from the screen, and a 110" diagonal image with the bottom edge around 24" off the floor.

I have the Epson dropped down 30" from the ceiling, and the image still isn't low enough as I would like when the projector is level. I tried angling and the keystone correction, I was horrified as it ate away the pixels!

Any lower and it will start getting in the way.

So I'm looking for suggestions on what projectors could meet my requirements. Looking to stay below $1300, probably.

You have the projector upside down, with it set to ceiling mode correct?

Because of your high ceiling the 2030 has a slight negative off set so it has to be slightly below the top of the screen. The Mits HC7900DW has a very large off set and could be mounted right on the ceiling and is a steel at $800. If you need to stay with LCD the Epson 8350 is your only choice and its not 3D. The BenQ 1070 would also work as it has a slight lens shift. Anything else in that price range with lens shift would have to be used. I think the Epson 3010 has a positive off set and could be mounted 8" or so above the screen

The Mits. is a great recommendation. It's really priced quite low right now and offers a tremendous value for the money. It has a lot of offset, like 20 inches or so, which is great for your high ceilings. So, you wouldn't need to lower it nearly as much to get the image where you want it.

Research OFFSET and look at the owner's manual before you purchase to ensure this works for you the way you want it to.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I do want to have 3D, also.

The Mitsubishi, I wonder if it will be bright enough in 3D mode - I plan on using an AT screen with gain of 1.0.

So I think I've narrowed it to three - Mitsubishi HC7900DW, BenQ W1070, or Epson 3020. I'm leaning towards the BenQ, based on price and brightness. But I want to make sure I'm reading their projector calculator correctly - it says the screen will be 39" above the floor - but there is 32" vertical lens shift - does this mean I could lower it to 7" above the floor? Any other factors I should take into consideration - maybe replacement lamp cost? Size and brightness calculations attached below.

The BenQ W1070 has much less vertical shift range than you state. As I recall its vertical lens shift range is only 15% of screen height or for a 110" diagonal screen, where the screen height is about 54", the total lens shift range is only 0.15 x 54" = 8.1". The lowest the W1070 can be positioned (center of lens to top of the projected image) is something like 3" above the top of the screen. If you can find the Mits HC7900DW at anywhere near the price of the BenQ W1070 then the Mits would be a steal at that price as it's a much more upscale projector than the entry-level W1070. Okay, thanks Ron. I wonder why the BenQ calculator shows 2'8" vertical lens shift...

So I guess if I got the Mits, I would just have to accept 3D movies would have to be in a fully darkened room - or perhaps try to get a higher gain screen.

Okay, just ordered a Mits package from Amazon - give it a try and hope it's bright enough, and that we don't see the DLP rainbows!

If we saw rainbows and needed an LCD projector with 3D and lens shift, it looks like Epson 5030 would be the solution? At $2600, ouch. Or Panasonic PT-AE8000U at $2200.

The Epson 3020 would work if I dropped it down about 30", which is do-able, but not ideal.
