If my video sources are progressive scan video from a Philips Q50 DVD (Faroudja chip), OTA HD & NTSC from a Zenith DTV1080 STB (which seems to provide various format conversions), do I really need a scaler (i.e., Faroudja NR). No cable or satellite.

I don't fully understand the DVT1080 upconversion specs and how it plays with their identified output jacks.

Comments & education welcome.

Hi,

The Sharp's internal scaler does a very good job with 480i, 480p, and 1080i. You may indeed find that the 9000's internal deinterlacer is better than your DVD player's, in which case you're better off running 480i into the Sharp.

Only drawback is you must choose film or video mode, it does not seem to be capable of auto-selecting this.

Best Regards,

Pat

I take it all this talk of scalers becomes irrelevant if you’re using a HTPC?

I don’t recall seeing a definitive answer about using a HTPC with the Sharp. I heard that it is HTPC unfriendly, but I’m not quite sure exactly what that means. Is it very unfriendly or is it just slightly unfriendly :)?

Does anyone know what sort of problems if any you’ll have using a HTPC with the Sharp?

Thanks
