I'm looking to replace my five year old receiver with an HD version. I would also like get a DVR. I read a Direct TV news release mentioned here about a Tivo/Direct HD tuner with the DVR built in. When I asked Direct TV about it they couldn't say much. One thing they did say was that if I bought a stand alone tuner and got Tivo later, it wouldn't be able to record HD broadcasts. Does this make sense? Also, does anyone have an idea as to when this unit will be available?

Kind of. No, you won't be able to record the HD version of the broadcast but you will be able to record the downcoverted version.

The HD DirecTivo will be out in a couple of months. Check the HDTV Recording section here and the HD DirecTivo section at the Tivo Community for more information.
Bottom Line -- If you want to record HD, and you have, or wish to get, DirecTV -- the HD DirecTivo is the way to go.
MSRP is about $999. Recording time is 200 hrs Standard Def. and 30 hrs HD.
