Do I really need a built in HDTV tuner

274 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  kdog044
I'm looking at getting an RPTV and wondered, if Comcast or DirecTV have tuners in teir STB, does it really matter if I buy a TV with a built in tuner? I also understand that TVs will be required to have HD tuners built-in. Why would that be since most likely you'll end up with 2 tuners and one TV. Am I missing something here. Thanks - Jack

Only get a built in tuner if you're opposed to using dual tuner DVRs, or if you might want to watch a third source while your dual tuner DVR is already recording two things.
The only two reasons I can think of is you don't want to pay to rent the STB or if you have plans for OTA HD. All of the integrated sets come with QAM (cable) and ATSC (OTA) tuners. There are OTA receivers but again it is a purchase that will run you $200-$400. As far as the cable STB goes, unless the integrated set also has cable card you will be limited to the unscrambled stations anyway. As far as when the sets will have to have integrated HD tuners it goes by screen size. By July 2006, 25- to 35-inch sets will have an included HD tuner (also called an ATSC tuner), and by 2007, all TVs will have them. The FCC is mandating integrated converters so that you won't be required to subscribe to cable or satellite, or have to purchase an expensive external box to get TV with an antenna. TVs with included digital tuners are allowed to call themselves 'HDTVs,' while you'll see digital TVs without converters called 'HD-ready, 'HD-capable' or 'HD-monitors.'
