Do I really need a streaming player?

Hi folks,

I recently updated my system with used components (Technics SU-G700 amplifier and KEF R7 Speakers). Since my TV is connected via optical cable to the amplifier and it supports AirPlay (I can turn off the screen), I'm wondering, if a dedicated streaming player would make any difference? As far as I know AirPlay is capable of 44.1 khz/16 bit sound quality and that's enough for me. Will a streaming player improve the sound quality? Are the DACs in streaming players superior to the DAC in my amp? Do TVs or other WiFi receivers somehow change the digital signal they're receiving (when connected via optical)?

I'm a bit worried because dedicated streaming players are very, very different in pricing. I could use my TV, buy a cheap AirPlay adapter for 150 bucks or for example a Technics SL-G700, which is probably 20 times more expensive 😟.

I really appreciate your opinion on that topic 🙂🙃,
Leslie

The DAC in the SU-G700 is good enough. If you're happy using your TV, I'd just keep doing that. If you want to unburden your TV, then an airplay adapter. I have the technics SL-G700, a great player, streamer etc. But I have SACDs and a lot of high rez files to contend with so I went that route. If you're just using 44/16 it's not really needed.

More importantly, I'm interested in your impressions of the SU-G700. That integrated has been on my short list. How does it do in driving the Kef's? I've paused because I think the SU-G700 is a bit underpowered. Any feedback on that amp would be appreciated. You an PM me with the details since this thread isn't about amps.

IMO, you don't really need a streaming player.
