Do internet appliances get smooth Netflix?

Just out of curiosity, do things such as DVD players with built in netflix connection capability get smooth video playback?

I'd like to know how I could replicate that on my PC. Figure I've got to have more horsepower. Why do I get stuck with choppy video?

Regards,

Mike

Choppy video can either be from lack of pc power, or video card power, however choppy video can also be from slow or poor internet connection.

Are you using wireless at all?

What internet do you have? and how fast is it suppose to be?

have you done any internet speed tests at all?

Also do you have an xbox 360? if so you can test out netflix streaming with that.

Got a Roku player, and yes, I get smooth Netflix. That's with 20mbps cable and 802.11g wifi from router to Roku.
I also get smooth netflix playback with both my Samsung BD-P1600 and LG BD-300.

The only time the picture is choppy is if AT&T DSL is acting up.

99% of the time it's a smooth picture.

I am using wired LAN connections directly to the players, no WIFI.

I didn't get the Roku because if we got tired of netflix, and cancelled it, I did not want to be stuck with a useless box.
Just a thought, latest version of Silverlight is supposed to have hardware acceleration now. Have you upgraded to the newest version yet?

*sigh* Windows Media Player-based Netflix Instant Watch was much easier to deal with. That one played smoothly even on a Windows XP virtual machine with a Celeron 430 running at stock frequency. No hardware acceleration, either (945GC chipset). Picture quality was better on WMP, too.

I'm using a wired connection with AT&T 6Mbps DSL. Not as sexy as the cable modem, but should be fast enough. I've gotten speedtest.net figures in the mid 4Mbps range.

I posed the question because I've heard that Silverlight has caused issues with the smooth playback. From what I understand, the appliances use the old player software.

Wondering if there is a way to get the old player software working with my PC.

Netflix works great on the Xbox 360. Perfectly smooth.

Any idea if it's possible to force the old player to be loaded?

Unfortunately, no. Once you switch to Silverlight, that's it. That's one reason why I didn't opt in to the Silverlight beta.

I guess I'll have to check on the latests Silverlight. Are there any tweaks to apply to the app?
