The Criterion DVD transfer retained the original color timing by the film makers. But unfortunately it also suffered from what the studios has used prominently to artificially sharpen the picture the dreaded EE - Edge Enhancement. This same EE is also used on some HD transfers. This blu-ray disc is not infected by it.

The HD broadcast version was recorded at 2007 the color timing is already different from the previously released CC DVD. The Blu-ray release should retain the artistic intent with all the advantages of 1080p transfer. Right?

Like some previous catalog Blu-ray release there is always something that goes horribly wrong because ignorant amateurs are left in charge of transferring or restoring this pieces of cinematic art. This movie is ranked #96 at AFIs revised list and should deserve some extra attention from the studios by doing it right.

I highly recommend that you do not buy this release. It may not affect the way they will treat all future transfers but there is a principle involved. There is just some disc(s) that deserve scorn and this is one of them.

Which of your screen caps shows Edge Enhancement on the Criterion transfer? I'm not seeing it. There's a little bit of mosquito noise around Rosie's shoulders in the third comparison, but that's not the same as EE. If EE were really used, it ought to be visible around the detail of the clock face in the first shot, but there's none there.

Are there other scenes you haven't capped yet where it's prominent? (I don't have the disc.)

I think the BD looks great, all told given the title we're talking about. The color timing change doesn't bother me, and it IMO looks better than the original color, that's just my subjective opinion.

The BD does have some EE in it though, but there is oodles of detail in the disc. I certainly would recommend the BD over SD DVD.

The BD looks more natural.

Yep,Rosie looks like an ooompa loompa in that dvd kitchen shot. The BD is much more natural.

The colour change didn't bother me and the audio was superior. "fight the power".....

This line's gotten a little hyperbolic, don't you think? Both image types convey a sense of heat, it's just that the SD-DVD's look like summer on Mercury.

This line's gotten a little hyperbolic, don't you think? Both image types convey a sense of heat, it's just that the SD-DVD's look like summer on Mercury.

That's the point. Don't comment on it if you haven't seen it, because you clearly haven't.

Well that goes down in my book as the most idiotic post I've read all year; for your information, I own both the Criterion SD-DVD and the Blu-ray, have viewed both and have come to the conclusion that the color balance of the SD-DVD oversells the "hot" factor. I can easily see Ernest Dickerson and Spike Lee talking about the film in preparation for the BD mastering and saying, "wow, we really didn't trust ourselves when we were young guys making this thing...the film still feels plenty hot without skewing the colors into the area of inaccuracy".
