Will they fill a HDTV display?

At 480p?

At 480i only?

Does it look blurry or is it OK?

I'd say most games, but some are 4:3/480i only--one big one that is is Mario Party 8.

Also, a few have underscan meaning it's widescreen but you'll have small black bars on all 4 sides. Metroid Prime 3 has this, among others.

The games that are 16x9 and 480p look pretty good, but they are a bit jaggy and low res. Don't go in expecting it too look anywhere near as good as the 360 or PS3. Metroid Prime 3 (tiny black bars aside) looks pretty good IMO.

Honestly, if graphics are very important to you, the Wii isn't the console for you as it's just a slightly souped up Gamecube in terms of graphical power, and the lack of HD support is killer for videophiles.

What? No it isn't. Mario Party 8 is 480p, and it is 16:9. Now the gameplay itself is 4:3 inside a 16:9 frame, but the video output of the game is definitly widescreen.

My bad, was just going by complaints by others about it being 4:3. Never played it myself as I'd have a hard time finding a series I like less....

At any rate, that's just as bad IMO. For next gen games the actual gameplay has to be 16x9 (or at least close ala Metroid)and 480p or I'm not spending any money on it. Just no excuse not to be this generation, even on the woefully underpowered Wii.

OK, so, in summary, it varies from game to game and when 16:9 is supported it may still not fill a 16:9 display due to underscan.

Damn, I understand HD is not important to Nintendo, but 16:9 and 480p has been pretty common for years now.

I do play PS2 games on my HD set, I can deal with lower-resolution graphics, but I don't like to have black bars all around my games.

Don't all PS2 games have black bars on the left and right?

I've played with the setting option, and all the games (even ones with Widescreen modes) seem to leave borders on the sides unless I play in a zoom mode.

In my personal experience, it looks like that is a trick they learned later in the PS2's life. Alot of my earlier games don't have underscan issues.

Yeah, all I've played on it since getting my HDTV in June are Guitar Hero II (amazingly lag free on my set--calibration always shows 0MS), Shadow of the Colossus and Fifa 2006, and all had black bars. Oh, I did through Okami in just to see how it looked, but it's only 4:3--no 16:9 option.

Do you happen to know if Final Fantasy XII has underscan and how it looks on an HD set? That's pretty much the last PS2 game I'd like to pick up.

Most PS2 games have the same problem on PS3. They have black bars around them, even when they support widescreen and 480p, even if I use the Full Screen upscaling option.

So, I am not saying Sony does it right either.

If Wii games filled my display, I think I would buy one. (as I said, I can deal with the lower resolution games)

FF XII has underscan, and while the art is all excellent in the game, the aliasing can be rather distracting. It does do 480p and 16:9 though.

*edit*

I'm a horrible liar! No 480p!

Sorry no 480p in FFXII, I wish there was it would save my HDTV the trouble of de-interlacing and creating an annoying amount of artifacts.

FFXII does 480i 16:9. If you play it on a PS3, the system can output the game at any resolution from 480p to 1080p, though of course those resolutions are accomplished via scaling and are not native.

Thanks guys. Guess I'll pass then as I wasn't super interested in it anyway.

That's your prerogative of course, and it's probably the right decision for you. Let me add, however, that there's some games that you won't find anywhere else besides the Wii. You might read up on them and see if they interest you. Gameplay is, after all, the most important thing (but bad graphics can ruin any game, also).

I have a Wii. And enjoy it alot despite the lackluster graphics.

I was talking about Passing on FFXII on the PS2 based on the comments above.

I wasn't that interested in it--gamplay changes didn't sound good, not really time for a 50 hour game anyway etc.--so looking crappy in 480i was a deciding factor to steer clear of that one for me.
