I see a lot of people on here are constantly talking about buying Blu-rays, some blind buys and some buy just because they like the movie. I know that it is a hobby for some or maybe you are a just a collector. I never understood the point of buying movies that you've never seen, or even buying movies that you liked but you may only watch one more time. In the past I used to buy dvds all the time and then I realized how much money I was wasting. I only re-watched maybe 10-15 of those movies. With the advent of Netflix/Redbox I just don't see any point in buying most movies anymore, especially when the Blu-rays run $20-$30. Although I get enjoyment out of watching movies I will never re-watch 99% of them.

Anyone feel the same?

I like to collect movies not just to have but to eventually rewatch, and I rarely blind buy unless I knew it was a good one I missed in theater....and yea i admit there are some I dont end up rewatching a whole lot. But I do watch movies alot when I can....even if it is just to have one playing in the background. And depending on my mood I have a large selection to choose from. Plus I like to entertain guests and I usually have movies they want to see so I will play a movie for them or let them borrow (lost alot of DVDs in college doing this ha).

I keep a fairly lean collection of around 100 dvds/blu-rays that inspire me, and I use Netflix for everything else. And I never blind-buy! Shooting movies is my career and my life's passion, and having a physical library on my bookshelf is extremely important to me, even if I only watch each of those movies "once in awhile".

I organize my collection chronologically, so my library allows me to see the history of film as filtered through my own personal taste right there on my bookshelf, from DW Griffith's INTOLERANCE, all the way up through 400 BLOWS and 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, all the way up to my most-recent blu-ray: NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN.

A physical library is much more inspiring to me than a mere list or series of images on a computer.

Certain titles I return to numerous times over a year, so-called classics and Guilty Pleasures. My purchases isn't as prolific as DVD, but I have a good 100+ that I dip into many times. Rentals make up most of my viewing, but I will watch something like The Godfather a couple times during a year.

What do you mean by "that many times"? twice? 4? 15? How many times would justify buying them? ...I guess it's rather subjective.

+1.

I also like to collect them. I like the physical aspect. Makes me feel like I really "own" it, and I don't care if that sounds silly
. I love movies and I like having my own library.

My wife and I re-watch movies all the time. We certainly arnt the norm, but its part of what makes us work so well together. There are some movies that we go in phasis of watching over and over, some we like playing in the background while puttering around the house and of course some that reference holidays we only bring out certain times of year, but watch every year.

The reason we blind buy is simple. We HATE how annoying people are at the theater and justify a blind buy with forgoing the cost of blind buying tickets. Plus I would much rather watch a movie on my system with a cigar, bottle of win and our pets then go to some crappy theater. To us a movie isnt released until its available on BD.

Another reason we buy and own is because we live 10 min from a buy/sell/trade movie and music store which at any time will buy any media you through at them so if we dont like the blind buy we sell it off for 25% of what we paid.

Same question to go to those who have a library of books rather then just a $10 library card.

First and foremost, I collect movies. Whether it is on LD, DVD, HD DVD, or BR is secondary. Periodically, I make my way through my (relatively lean) library of 600 titles (including TV series), which is kept on a custom Access database, which also keeps track of if a movie has been watched in a given "cycle".

A Physical library is also important to me as it keeps me completely independent of stuff like:

1) rental availability

2) J6P stupidity in media care

3) PC changes in film content (Disney, Steven Spielberg)

4) Revisionist film-making (George Lucas)

5) The studio delusion that they have any influence on my viewing habits (or still have any ownership whatsoever in that copy) after I buy the film.

I have been into collecting my favorite movies, archiving them, and watching them since my first 2-head mono VCR (I became a master using the "pause" button to cut out the HBO promo stuff, and commercials when recording from live TV). I only rent to avoid blind buys.

I am very picky when it comes to buying anything, movies included. I've never owned more than 30 dvd's until I got my first widescreen tv and surround system. I love being able to watch movies at home now. I have netflix for my weekly fix (I almost never watch tv) and then I have my collection to pull from on the weekend or whenever. When HD DVD went on fire sale my collection grew to over 300 (hd/bd combined). Netflix lets me preview the movies I'm interested in buying so no blind buys for me. I really dont see me in the download movie game for a long, long time so I'm trying to get a sweet collection together that will stand the test of time. I've always wanted my dvd's to "look sharper" and never really understood why they couldnt until hidef came along. Now I'm finally satisfied with the video quality of my hidef movies and I can see this being the case from my current hidef collection for many years. 1080P at last!

It's the establishment of the movie library. To me, there is no difference between physical media and books. How many books in ones library do you re-read? If you hear a song once on the radio, why would you buy it? Surely one wouldn't listen to it over and over, right? Wrong! Books, movies, music, crystal, cars, coins, stamps...Whatever. People like to collect various items and this hobby of ours is no different. Anyway....for those who don't collect movies and TV shows: Rent, stream, pirate, whatever turns you on.

I have replayed certain segments of movies possibly a hundred times or more. Entire reviewing more rare, but I do that too. I buy movies to absorb them into my beingness -- my selections serve to define and represent me as a unique human on this planet -- without having the disc, that movie is not really a part of me yet. There are movies I will always own, whether I retain any way of watching them. Now with the uncompressed sound and sparkling clarity, this is perhaps the highest form of presentation I will ever own and I've been rebuying the extensive must-haves all over again, even if when I get it and start to rewatch, I don't feel particularly compelled to finish.

I certainly have slowed down on DVD/BD purchases over the years, but I will still buy something I REALLY like (e.g. Star Trek); I still have LD's and don't plan on replacing many of my DVD's with BD's. I never blind buy, we don't see many movies in the theater, and we typically have a weekly Netflix rental; for everything else (especially in the summer), I'll dig into my personal library. I prefer owning the "media" as opposed to downloads, etc.

I am with you 100%. I also like to delve into extras, especially commentaries by participants. Needing a way to kill an hour the other night, I pulled out the sdvd of "Becket" my friend gave me when he bought the Blu-Ray. I spent my hour delightedly listening to the brilliantly acerbic Peter O'Toole comment on the film ("of COURSE it's not 'History!'"), the play, Richard Burton and more.

So-- do I rewatch my Blu-Rays (or sDVDs)? Sure-- depending on the title and disc content.

I collect movies because I love them. I`m in the process of replacing the DVDs I love the most with Blu-rays. I do rent from Netflix and seldom buy blind unless its something by Eastwood or the Cohen Brothers, etc. I do not do the streaming thing as yet. The quality simply sucks and picture and sound quality is paramount for me.

I have hundreds of HD DVD & Blu-ray discs, 95% of which have all only been watched once. I buy almost every movie I want to watch, I dont know why I do it but I cant stand renting....

Rewatching movies is usally limited to a very few select personal favorites and guests coming over and picking out a movie they want to see. Which by the way also helps justify the initial purchase thinking it will be there for a possible choice for future guests.

Absolutely yes. Trying to give my ears a rest from the crash and bang, I watched all the extras to IRON MAN/2 disc -- they were extensive and enlightening. Just recently listened to the commentaries (that were there -- not many of them) on some episodes of DEXTER S1 BD. Always nice to have entertainment in reserve, and conversely a little depressing when you've watched it all (like wrapping up DEXTER S2 viewing -- what a drag! Now what?! -- ANSWER: REWATCH!!!)

Hate to admit, but I'm in this camp. Collecting is a disease & we refuse to be cured by renting or just not buying movies that will collect dust on the shelf. But, oh what joy it is to stand back & admire your own collection, know you easily out-do your local Blockbuster, and know you can pick any movie out of the shelf & watch when you feel like it. Even if you actually don't.

That is true… I hardly ever read a book more than once, but I still buy them. So I will never criticize anyone for buying movies, and only viewing them a couple of times. Different strokes for different folks… but for me. I like renting movies. Because I can’t watch movies more than once…
