Do you have your player on your network?

994 Views 28 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  HDDVD rules
Do any of you leave your HD-DVD player hooked up to your home network? I know that this is used for firmware updates and possible extra content, but I was wondering does the player "call home" and report on your habits? I have a couple of burned discs that I sometimes watch, but I guess I could put these in my regular DVD player. Anyway, I was just curious.

Yes. I've only watched 2 HD-DVD movies in the past 5 days and 6 SD-DVDs. Have had the A1 on standby almost all other time.

I bought a router and cabling last Sunday and hooked up my HD-A1 to my dsl line. I don't leave the player on all the time. The router indicates the line for the player is only active when the player is turned on. I tried a firmware update, knowing none was available, just to see if the connection was good. Got a licensing agreement screen, clicked on "accept" and got an "updating firmware" message on the screen followed by a "firmware already updated" or something similar on the tv screen along with a message on the player's display that said "VUP Error 136". I called Toshiba tech support and asked if the error message was anything to worry about and was told that the fact that I got the licensing agreement screen indicated that my connection was good, and that the error message probably didn't indicate any malfunction with my setup.

Yeah, I tried the same thing and I, too, called Toshiba (Canada). They told me my player is fine after they have transferred me to 4 different persons :D

I've watched my router while the XA1 was on and playing movies and just idle. The only time I've seen network activity was when I requested a software update from the setup menu.

I know that it is not positive proof of anything. I will leave the player disconnected from the network until such time as we hear from the IT types that the A1/XA1's don't phone home on their own.

I know we are dealing with Toshiba and not Sony, but you never know. ;)

"Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get me"
I've got mine connected to the net all the time, too. Just waiting for them to come out with a firmware update!
Same here. I read on another thread that the first firmware upgrade will be on disc. I wonder if it will also be on-line.

Rafael
Yep, 24/7.
Mine is also connected through my router (awaiting a firmware update) , I keep my player blocked from the internet however and will only un-block it for firmware updates .

I didn't send in my card so it better be online. I would think it would be pretty stupid of Toshiba to have an option in the player to update firmware and then only offer it on disc.
I found my XA1 using the network connection last night while it was powered down; I used my networking sniffing tools and determined it was logged into AVSForum as "rdjam" and was posting all over :D :D :D

we need a little humor around here ;)
The person I spoke to was not sure if the new firmware will be on line. You don't have to send in your card. Call Toshiba and speak to the HD A1 support and they will put you on the list for firmware update disks.

Hmm, it has enough of what some might call 'pretty stupid' bugs that we know of already. What if one we don't know about yet is ...the remote firmware update doesn't work... ?? Now, where is that card I need to send in? :)
Ridiculous not to provide the upgrade online!

They ARE providing it online, or do you mean in a form that you can download, burn to a disc and load yourself? We don't know yet whether you will be able to separately download the upgrade, but I can't imagine why that wouldn't be the case unless they want to avoid any issues with the myriad of writable media out there that consumers might use.

upgrading the denon 3910 has proven tedious for some where it just wouldn't work with certain kinds of rewritable media...

:D :D ! So THAT explains everything!

Don't return it Ben- send it to me! :p
HD-A1 on my network. I can ping it, but no other ports open on it running nmap -p 1-65535
Send in the pink card that came in the box. Yes it has bugs but you should not be surprised. So far Toshiba is working hard to get things right. I have had much better luck using the Harmony 880 remote than with the Toshiba remote. They realize that there is a problem with the remote. Have a little patience and see what they do. I would suggest that all of us with problems call the number in the manual. They will set up a case and report the problem to those working on a firmware update. I also hope they will make the update available for download. I person with whom I spoke did not have information about the update being on line.
Question for all those who've tried for a firmware update:

Does the display on your player read "VUPError136" at about the same time the onscreen display says it's already updated??
