Do you put the lens cap back on after each viewing and OK to wipe the lens daily?

Do you guys put the lens cap back on after each viewing or just leave it off most of the time?

Would it be OK to wipe the dust off the lens after each viewing, or do you just leave it as is and wipe it off after a few months?

I put my projectors back in the shipping box after every viewing.. tape the flaps.

THere was a long thread on this subject sometime last year. The consensus was that most did not put the lens cap back on after the initial setup and mounting.

I put the lens cap on after (most) every viewing, unless I am in a hurry and forget. I would be concerned about damaging the lens eventually wiping it all the time though... you only have to have some grit on the cloth or lens once...

It wouldn't be advisable to wipe the lens at every use. It is not necessary as a normal layer of dust on the lens has no impact on the image quality. there is a risk of wearing the lens coating by over zealous frequent wiping.

When you do wipe the lens use a pupose made lens cleaning liquid and tissues from a photographic supplier.
Don't have my new pj yet, but plan on using the lens cap.

Have to look for my old 35mm lens brush. Should work a snap.

I dont use the Lens Cap either. I hit it with air from a few feet away now and then and only wipe it if it gets heavy a dust layer. Ive got a pretty good handle on dust in general in my apartment so mine never gets bad, even the screens on my Lamp housing collect very little dust.
Never used a lens cap. Hit it w/ air every couple months or so.
Maybe someone should create a poll. I put my lens cap back on my HD1 everytime I shut it down which is where it stays until I get ready to fire it up again.

No. Remember that cleaning the lenses inevitably introduces scratches to the lens. Only clean when the lens is dirty enough to require cleaning, which will depend on how dusty the environment is, among other things(I'd say in an average environment maybe yearly). Blowing off loose surface dust with a small hand pump lens blower is a good idea to do more frequently.
No, you don't have to put the lens cap back on. Just use a blower (one I use for DSLR lens ex. Gitzo Rocket blower, serves dual purpose, too, if you shoot photos/videos) occassionally and only clean the lens when it has visible smudge/oil deposits on it with let's say a microfiber cloth or lens tissue. Anyway, in my case I've never had to clean the lens after 2 projectors since 2000. The only maintenance you'll do is cleaning the dust filters every few months to ensure airflow is optimal for ventilation. As someone mentioned earlier, having dust on the front of the PJ lens does not degrade the image quality in any manner anyway. Hope this helps you out.
I put the lens cap back on, mainly to prevent fingerprints.

Not mine, btw.

That lens is so shiny and bright, kids and some other people seem to play the deep scene in Finding Nemo and just "want to touch it."

Best Regards,

Doug

Not as funny as you think, One day the misses and I we were watching a movie and I thought to myself, "Damn that image is bad". At the first intermission I checked and the lens cap was still on.

I'm surprised you even got an image.

Frankly, I think it's a good idea to put the lens cap on when the projector is not in use. It only takes a second, and can prevent a lot of expensive mishaps.
I would not wipe the lens after each viewing. This would eventually leads to a lot of small abrasions on the lens surface, and would eventually do more harm than good. I would just use compressed air, and even then, sparingly.
This is indeed a funny thread.

I've always thrown my lens cap away. But I do put the cap back on my beer after every sip

That's some nasty stuff coming out of your nose if it ruined your shirt. Put it in the wash. I'm sure it'll be fine.
