With the permission of our fine moderator, I present the following poll.

Please feel free to comment, add a humerous remark, get something off your chest, whatever.

But please try to vote honestly, as I hope we can establish a base line on the subject, among those AVS members who do chose to vote.

Thanks

I see rainbows much less now than when I first got our X1. (July 2003)

They are a non-issue. I see them perhaps every three movies or so and in some movies a couple of times. But as I say I attach no importance to them and they are nothing.

Our guests never seem to see them. I don't clue them in.

My wife, who knows about them, says she never sees them.

I learned how to see them (thanks to AVS) but after I stopped looking for them I don't see them anymore.

Never have. I don't think I'll ever have to worry about seeing them anymore. This is from a 4x color wheel. I haven't seen a 2x wheel enough to see rainbows.

Whenever a light flickers, I notice it. Whenever I computer monitor is set to too low a refresh frequency, I notice it. Whenever I see a demo on a DLP, I see rainbows to the point that I can't watch a B&W picture on a DLP (unless it's a 3-chip). I wish I didn't notice anything. It's not that I'm looking for the rainbow, it finds me

BTW, a B&W laserdisc will produce a lot less rainbows for me than a B&W DVD, because of the reduced definition that causes less abrupt constrast differentials inside the picture.

For those individuals claiming to never have seen a rainbow I have a question for you: how do you know? I'm being serious, here. If you have never seen a DLP rainbow, how do you know if you have seen one before or not?

I'm mostly used to lcd's, but after 40 hours on the 4805, I have yet to see one and I try every single movie. If it wasn't for avs making such a big deal about it, I wouldn't even know about them.

None of my company has seen them either.

There's an animated gif thats been floating around the board that gives a good example of what I believe the rainbow effect is. I'm guessing thats what it is. :)

So.....if you've seen rainbows on a 2x PJ, but you don't on your current machine, how do you vote?

If you vote yes, you give people the impression that rainbows are still an active part of your daily viewing.

If you vote no, you have to deal with the insinuations that you just don't know how to see them or even IF you're seeing them.

I saw them on my LP350 and now on my X1. If you don't watch too long it's ok, but my son just told me that he has quit gaming on the X1 because of the headaches he gets (which he doesn't get on his 32" TV or his 19" LCD flat screen monitor, or on his old 19" CRT monitor).

I only see them when there is something bright in a dark scene. For example, a torch in a cave or something like that.

They don't bother me as I only see them now and then. Others that have been over, with the exception of my brother in law, don't see them, even after describing what they are supposed to be seeing.

Anyway, after installing an ND2 filter, they are essentially gone - about 95% gone.

Well I see them on very single chip DLP if they are bright enough. If they are dimmer (via eco modus and or ND-filter) they persist only in very critical scenes but are less bothersome. BTW everyone who sees no rainbows can easily be shown how they look like. just wave your hand back and forth in the beam infront of the pj. The red, blue and green picture gets seperated in several layers...

i see them and cant stand them . but i wonder. if the price of multi chip dlps fall will single chip dlps no longer be sold? if that is the case maybe dlps will garner even more support from those looking to get into the low cost projection market.as someone looking to eventually upgrade from my panasonic ae700 perhaps dlp will be an option

My only DLP experience is with the SP4805. However, I tried to see the RBE while watching sets on display at electronics stores. After reading about them and how to see them, it was very very difficult to do so. Only by violently twisting my head back and forth was I able to see any RBE on the display sets. I would NEVER do this during normal viewing though.

With this in mind, I readily purchased the SP4805. Even after specifically looking for it, I could not find any RBE. During games and movies, there is no appearnce for me. With over 250 hours on my unit now, I have had only one experience with the RBE. The closing credits of a movie I watched had very bright white letters on a black background. If I tried, by moving my eyes rapidly, I could see the RBE.

For me, RBE is a non-event.
