All of us can plug our stand-alone DVD players into any of our TVs using component video cables and it works. Why can't we do the same thing with PCs? If you have to have different timings for different TVs, why does the DVD player not have to?

People just don't expect a set top DVD player to work without overscan. They also don't expect them to provide 1:1 pixel mapping and all the other stuff people complain about with PCs.
