Does it make sense upgrading from H31 to H70 for just DVD watching?

I currently have an Optoma H31 and its 480p. I watch up fairly close, so sometimes I see some screen door effect. Would I have this problem if I upgraded to the 720p HD70?

Screen door effect will definitely lessen, but that is the only real advantage.

Good to know. And outside of that, there are no actual improvements in brightness/PQ/color/blacks/scaling etc?
Since the HD70 is the next gen, I would expect some improvements even though they are both Darkchip 2 based.
Please help me learn here.

If you are playing standard def dvd movies and using up conversion wouldn't the H70 do a better job with its' higher native resolution than the less capable H31 along with less screen door effect?
SD DVDs can look a little better but more from the reduced SDE and video processing of the PJ than the upscaling. Upscaling requires the PJ to extrapolate pixels that don't exist in the original image. Depending on the quality of the DVD transfer, this may or may not add any benefit and could expose the dvd if it is lower quality. This why the BenQ W500 is supposed to be good for that, it has the HQV chipset for higher quality upscaling. However, YMMV.
I did just what you're thinking of, from H31 to HD70. I'm running an Oppo DVD player for upconversion, and it definitely looks better than the H31. Pixel structure is pretty much invisible from normal viewing distance. I haven't tried letting the HD70 do the conversion, but I expect it would work pretty well too. Colors and contrast are pretty much the same. Black level might be just a little bit better, but not much.

The big diff comes when you upgrade your signal to HDM. Obviously, the higher the res the less the SDE. Inside 1x is possible with 1080p.
I just upgraded from 480 to 720 because my projector died. I was using a dvb318 upped to 1080i. There was certainly an improvement. But even knowing this, I would not have done it just to upgrade. Prices are going to continue to fall. I would estimate that 1080p will be under $1200.00, w/o a rebate, by this time next year.

My 2¢...

The H31 is a nice projector. Since you're not using a high definition player at this time, I would recommend holding onto the H31 until the bulb goes or you are ready to commit to a next generation format.
H31 is a really nice projector with great color and its pretty bright. I upgraded to the hd70 because I wanted to play high definition content. HD is awesome on the hd70 and of course beats the H31 easily. But for just playing DVD content there is not a big difference, assuming you don't have a big problem with screen door. I can sit 5ft from my 65" screen and just barely see some hint of the screen door on the hd70, normally I sit about 10ft away.

The color on the hd70 is a bit better, upconverted DVDs are a bit sharper, brightness is up some so overall the hd70 is a nicer projector, but I would say it is not worth the upgrade yet. Wait for your bulb to burn out and then the current machines will be that much cheaper, you might end up going for a 1080p.
