can you use a car amplifier in a home theater system? can you use an entire car audio system in your home?

You'll need a 12V power supply for it, rated for adequate current output.

Car audio systems tend to be rated to have distortion levels many times higher than home audio systems. In a typical car environment the ambient noise masks the extra distortion.

where can I get a 12V power supply? for how much? and how exactly does that work?
I bought one a while back at a local eletronic parts store, for about $70. I'm not sure it had enough power to drive a big car stereo though.

It has a plug to go into the wall on one side, and a pair of terminals, black and red, that you connect to your 12-volt equipment.

Electricity from your wall socket is 120-volt AC. Electricity from a car battery is 12-volt DC. A car amplifier will blow up if you wire a plug to it and stick it in a wall socket.

ok thanks... would you recommend using car subwoofers on a home theater system?
If all you want to do is rattle the kitchen plates, it'd be okay.

If you wanted decent quality bass music, and explosions without boomy resonances, then no.

And it'd be silly to spend the money on a 12-volt power supply for a car subwoofer. Save it for a real subwoofer later.

I recently encountered this issue. It's cheaper to get a dedicated HT amp instead of buying a large enough transformer to power the car amp.
