not really

for the best in DVD quality you need compent cables.

Or better yet an upscaling player and DVI/HDMI.

I'm asking because I want to record from a digital/HD STB (with DVR) to a computer, for which s-video seems to be my only option (or firewire, but the STB firewire ports aren't enabled).

Thanks,

Bob

S-video is analog 480i, only. Which is, technically, DVD quality. But nowhere near what you want from digital/HD. You will get much better captures with firewire. If I understand correctly, your cable company is required by FCC regulations to provide you with a firewire enabled STB if you ask for it. If you don't request it, they usually don't provide it.

DVD stores frames as interlaced fields, the actual film data is really 480P frames so unless you are displaying 480P, you aren't getting the full resolution of DVD.

Also, the number of scanlines is only onle part of the equation. Horizontal resolution is a function of the video bandwidth, and S-video is much lower than component or HDMI.

So the short answer is no, S-video cannot carry the full DVD bandwidth.
