Does the Alpha PAL8045 Heat Sink fit the KS75A v3.1 Motherboard?

303 Views 8 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  micj
According to one compatibility source, it says the Alpha PAL8045 Heat Sink will not fit an ECS K7S5A version 3.1 motherboard due to version 3.1 having larger caps.

I carefully measured the surrounding objects on my motherboard comparing it to the PAL8045 drawing measurements and found no such issues.

Perhaps there are 2 versions of the 3.1 motherboard, one having larger caps?

Anybody know for sure?

Thanks,

Ira

P.S. (This is not a thread to say how much you love/hate the K7S5A board:) )

i have an 8045 on my K7S5A although unsure of the rev number. if you tell me where it is silkscreened, i will take a look as long as its not on the backside of the board.
Hi Rick,

The Rev 3.1 number on my board is at the back (I/O Connector) corner of the motherboard where the PCI slot furthest from the Power Supply is located and is on the component side.

Thanks for looking,

Ira
Hi Micj:

___I have installed the 8045 on the first rev’s as well but the 3.1, I do not have a clue. I believe Alpha listed the first rev’s as being non-compatible with the ECS K7S5A boards. I purchased Alpha Pal 8045’s for the ECS boards after seeing two individuals that had installed them successfully on their own K7S5A’s during the time of initial release. I posted your question in a thread regarding the Rev 3.1’s in the ECS 2002 forums over at OCWorkbench. Just keep up with the link provided and you should hopefully have your answer in a day or two.

Wayne,

Thanks for posting that. I don't spend that much time on the OCWorknbench board as I don't really believe in overclocking (other than for schmoo testing). Nevertheless, they are a wonderful forum resource on the inner workings of boards, just as this is for Home Theater.

Ira
the little white sticker says "V3.1"

:)
Rick,

Thanks for your info.

This is the link (Alpha's web site)
http://www.micforg.co.jp/mb_inf_pal8045e.html

that indicated the large capacitors.

i'm sort of laughing reading that page. first line says...

"This motherboard list may be inaccurate"

perhaps they were trying to put the heatsink on sideways? ;)

there are no resistors or anything blocking the installation of the 8045 heatsink on my V3.1 board.

Wayne: thanks for the tip on the PC power&cooling fan it is silent!

As a followup, I got my PAL8045 heatsink and installed it with no problems on my 3.1 board.

I'm using a PAPST 8412 NGMLV 80cm fan. My CPU temperature is hovering at about 52 to 56 degrees C for the Socket A sensor and an Athlon 1800 XP. Do you know if that seems typical, or do I need better thermal paste?

Regards,

Ira
