The DVD Forum is still relevant for matters concerning SD DVD, and should Blu-ray win the format war as seems likely, it should be remembered that most BDA members are also DVD Forum members. I think pragmatism will rule the day and a closer working relationship will emerge.

Does the DVD Forum have any clout these days?
Is the DVD Forum for all intents and purposes, dead? It no longer has the clout it once did, and it is pretty clear that an endorsement doesn't mean much. Will it even be around in ten years?
Note: this is NOT a flaming topic. The same question could be posed to the BDA, except the time horizon would have to be expanded to twenty years.

The most logical thing would be for the two organizations to merge and to direct the on-going future of optical HDM. It is time to stop the arguing and move forward.
With DVD still the choice of consumers - then yes the Forum still has alot of clout.

I think combining the 2 would be bad. BD and DVD have very different patent structures and some of the DVD members may not want to see evolution out of DVD. The new forum would get bogged down in partisan politics like they did in the HDM war.
Back a few months ago, the CEO of Sony kind-of said the same thing. He, then, wished they all worked a little harder initially to resolve their differences, instead of splitting off into two formats.
IMHO, it was because that HD DVD and Blu-ray were both really loosing, and not because of their format wars, but because consumers really didn't have a strong need for any HD disc format.

The DVD forums involvement with HD DVD was in name only and sadly that confused a lot of people into thinking that the whole forum (ie Sony, Phillips, Matushita etc.) were involved in HD DVD, clearly not the case.

DVD Audio - failure
DVD-R, DVD-RW - tie
HD DVD - failing
Except for DVD Video, the forum has not had much success getting its products accepted by the industry or by the consumer.
I also hope that everyone realize that the forum is a mostly a marketing organization for promoting DVD technologies and standards. It has no legal or moral standing. If the forum cannot provide products that people want, then they will go elsewhere.

The DVD forum could not accept Blu-ray.
The format is to broken with all the incomplete specs and what not. They would go crazy trying to get everyone on the same page so all the movies would work the same on all the players lol.
Maybe one day in 3 to 5 years when everyone will have the same spec player.
EDIT: Just kind of mad... I want a good priced blu-ray player that's not the PS3 that I will not have to worry about upgrading once a better spec comes out like 2.0. I guess I will have to wait a while...

1. It issues the license to allow a manufacturer to use the all important DVD logo.
2. It sets the guidelines for construction of DVD's both for players and discs.
You have made too little of the success of the Forum because it is tied to DVD. Any variations of DVD still come under the heading of DVD.

All of the above are just normal contract law covering licensing of a given product/technology. It only affects companies who are interested in participating DVD technologies.

So if the DVD Forum doesn't offer people what they want, they will go elsewhere. And they have, with the expection of DVD Video. HD DVD is not the first time one of their initiatives have failed.
