Does the Panasonic DMR-ES15S play Divx files AS ADVERTISED?

1843 Views 15 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  rgazzara
I would really like a dvd burner that plays mpeg 1, wmv, divx, xvid, mov, vcd, svcd, xvcd, and even flv files but I'd settle just for Divx.

So does the Panasonic DMR-ES15S play Divx clips burned onto a cdr/w as advertized or not?

I still haven't gotten my tax return back yet, but when I do, the ES15, Toshiba D-R2 or the Toshiba D-RW2 are my top 3 choices. If the Panasonic will play Divx files as advertised, then it would probably be my top choice.

The R2 is only $130, but I've heard that it may have problems finalizing discs and makes many coasters.

Anyway, back to the subject, anyone tried playing DIVX clips burned onto a CDR?

Anyway here's what Panasonic Advertises.

I made a CD with MP3s, JPGs and a DIVX file. It can view the JPGs and play the MP3s but it does not see the DIVX file. I don't know why they are saying this because it's not so. :(
My Panasonic DMR-EH75V (2006 model like the ES15 but includes VHS deck and 80GB HDD) will play divx files burned to DVD-R. I burned about four or five feature length movies in DIVX format to DVD-R using Nero and the EH75V came up with a playlist menu with all five movies listed so I could select any one of them to play. Played well and I could navigate the movies using the ffw and rew controls on the recorder. I burned a single divx movie to CD-R but the disc was not recognized by the panny even though the manual said divx playback on cd was possible. I haven't done further testing to see if this was a media issue, burn rate issue, or if the DIVX CD feature is not really supported. The divx file was one of the ones I also burned to DVD-R which played back just fine. Note that the recorder did not support playback thsoe same divx files burned to DVD-RW (and the manual only explitly mentions DVD-R/CD-R support for DIVX playback) so it appears that DVD-RW divx playback is indeed not supported. Did not try +R/+RW media (also not mentioned in the manual as supported).

Bottom line is that I think DIVX playback from DVD-R and possibly CD-R appears to be supported in the 2006 Pannys so it should also work on the ES15.

I hope a future firmware update should fix the problem because they should not be advertising it as having DIVX support on CDR/Ws if it doesn't have it.

If someone will point me to a divx file that I can download, I'll put it on CD/DVD and see if it plays on my 15.
Nevermind, I found some.

And NO, the 15 does not play them.

I copied to CDR and the copy program recognized it as such.

At first, I tried to copy the file onto a DVD-R and the program indicated this was the wrong type of disc and asked for a CDR. I complied and tried that disc, plus another that I had copied with Roxio onto CDR.

No dice Chicago.

The display says "Unsupported" and the screen indicates that its not compatible.

I just finished reviewing the user manual that came with my ES15.

It specifically excludes DIVX video discs in the compatibility list.

I don't know whats up with the website but it contradicts the owners manual and real world test on the US spec model, so this isn't a fault on the machine.
Is panasonic.com an international web site? From other threads I gather that the British version plays DIVX but the American version does not.
Well there's anaother reason to get the richer feature set of the higher end HDD based recorders. My US EH75V does play divx files off DVD-R and its explicitly stated in the manual. Not sure why the left it out of the US ES15. Dumb move. Jury is still out as to whether it will actually play a divx file off of a CD. I need to experiment more in that area, but divx on cd is not really worth it for me. With DVD blanks at 40 cents with roughly six times the storage capacity of a CD, a CD would have to go for about 5 cents a disc for it to be worth it from a $/GB standpoint but it is also a loser for me because you can get six times the content on a single DVD-R disc, which is more convenient.
^^^ Agreed. The HDD recorders all have a richer feature set. Let's not forget the ES-15 is the bottom of the line unit. Selling for ~$150 it looks to be positioned as a simple VCR replacement to get the general consumer interested. One shouldn't expect a whole lot of advanced features from this unit. The problem is, the HDD units exist. People look at them and see the feature set and wonder "why can't I have all that" for a rock bottom price. I think the answer is pretty obvious.
My Es-15s manual (canadian) says that "Divx Video Disc" ..cannot be played.
As a followup, EH75V successfully recognized and played back a divx file burned to CD, so full DIVX functionality on DVD-R/CD-R has been verified on the EH75V.
OK, I just burned some DIVX files to CDR - absolutely no good on the ES15. Got the UNSUP-PORT message flashing on the display, DVD recorder flashed the message on the screen that "This disc is incompatable". I then burned DIVX files to a DVD-R, STILL no good, still got the UNSUP-PORT message on the display & the DVD recorder flashed the message on the screen that "This disc is incompatable", so DIVX DOES NOT happen on the ES15 AT ALL.
It's not just the Panasonic webiste, look at what Walmart advertises.

Just about EVERY SINGLE webiste I've seen says that it has DIVX playback, but it doesn't.

This is much more specific than Panasonic's website. How can people get away with FALSE advertising like that? Aren't there any laws against this kind of stuff?

I mean if they advertized that a car got 60 miles per gallon and it really got like 12 miles per gallon, then the car manufacturer would be in trouble, but how can consumer electronics manufacturers get away with false advertising like that?

The incredible thing is that many of the chepo mystery brand dvd players and recorders play divx, mpeg1, wmv, etc, but that the name brand players and recorders don't. That was the best thing about my Cyberhome 1600, it wasn't any good at finalizing or even formatting/recognizing discs, but it was damn good at playing back tons of different media. I did return the Cyberhome 1600 because my unit was no good at its primary function so the bonus features as good as they were were not enough.

Consumer electronics feautures lists on retailer's webistes are notoriously inaccurate. That's practically a given. Usually, there is a disclaimer on the website or in the paper circular regarding the advertiser not being responsible for typos or "printing errors". They can even get away with printing false prices using this "loophole". It's naive or wishful thinking to think otherwise.

But to be fair, manufacturers often post "proposed" feature sets before the design is finalized and sometimes these features don't make the final cut either because of technical difficulties encountered during preproduction testing or as a cost cutting measure to get the per unit cost/price down to some target value. Another problem is that specific features may be added or removed for specific global market places such as Japan, Asia, or Europe due to perceived demand or local regulations. However, the retailers cut and paste from the manufacturers webistes (or global websites) and don't take the time to back check the accuracy of the info, hence the inaccuracies noted above get propagated by the retailers. Because of this I never,

(1) pre-order a product from a website if that product has not yet been released and/or reviewed by others.

(2) rely on a website listing of features. Listed features are not real to me until they have been verified through actual user testing and reported in forums such as this one. This includes features actually listed in the manuals.

A check of the ES15, ES25, and ES45 manuals posted on line by the Panasonic US website shows that divx playback is explicitly NOT supported in those units. Divx playback IS supported in the EH75V (and I have verified it) and will likely be supported in the US EH55, but the US EH55 manual has not yet been posted on the Panny website.

Good point, vferrari.

I would never consider buying ANY electronic equipment until I get a chance to read the manual.
