Sorry probably stupid question...

I have a 1080p Samsung tv. My buddy want to give me an Onkyo receiver that does up to 1080i. Will the receiver actually make my picture worse??

Any help is greatly appreciated

The engineering rule of thumb is that the bandwidth of the device ought to be 3x or more the bandwidth of the signal to avoid degradation.

MCode what dictates a high quality 1080p source?

Any source capable of outputting a native video stream with a resolution of 720p or higher.. If the source device is SD and upscales to a resolution of 720p or higher, then one must compare the visual quality of each as there are significant differences between scaling algorithms...

Saying one product has 1080p does not guarantee an acceptable, high-quality picture.

Another crucial point is the source media, if off-air then additional noise is likely to be received along with the incoming signal adding to more visual byproducts.. Thats why an SD DVD when upscaled can often look superb, especially if the exterme care was taken through the mastering/production process..

You may be interested in a comparison done by Silicon Optix last year @ CEDIA the big high-end custom home theatre show in Denver. They did the comparison on a big HD screen (60") and divided the screen into 50/50. One side had a native 1080p feed and the other side had an SD stream upscaled to 1080p. Next the viewers were asked which picture looked the best, over 65% thought the upscaled SD was slightly better..
