So I have all my music on an external HDD stored as .wav files. The drive is currently plugged into my PS3, but I dont like that to listen to my music I have to turn on my TV. It's a sony sxrd and I dont want to be killing the lamp and using the electricity just so I can see the folders and songs to play. Plus the PS3 isn't exactly quiet when it's running, so that's an annoyance as well.

I have come up with the perfect solution, I just dont know if it exists. Is there a device that will plug into my receiver and hdd that will allow me to not have to use the screen? I have an iphone, so if an app exists for it to control that would be perfect.

The other solution, if no product currently exists, is to build a fanless pc with itunes (I would have to have xp right, no itunes on linux afaik) and use the apple remote app to control my music. If this is the only realistic solution, are there any good guides on how to build one? I want this to be completely fanless so the only noise it makes is from the hdd.

Thanks for any help you have!

All of which require that my TV be on to navigate the menu. I specifically asked if there is any that allows for remote navigation without the use of a monitor. IE a remote with a screen or can use my iphone to navigate.

Replace the external HDD w/ a NAS and add the Sonos, Squeezebox, new Linksys boxes and you have a solution.

since when does either Sonos or SB need the TV to be on???? someone should call up both Sonos and Squeeze and tell their respective companies that they both royally screwed up... since they are both marketed as no tv needed

actually, come to think of it, could you please explain How exactly I am suppose to hook up my Sonos to a TV? especially since Sonos doesn't even have any video connectors...(it is just an audio product after all)

or is it I just need to turn the TV on for some other reason? I cant believe I have been improperly using my Sonos all these years... what should I do in the zones that don't have a TV? do I now need to go buy a TV for each zone before I can use them again???

I hope I haven't broken anything or voided any warranties by not using a TV all this time??

hey CD or Ice, you should check your SB's to see if they have been damaged in any way by not using a TV... whats logitech's return policy about damage from not using a TV?

yea, while I am firmly in the Sonos Camp, I think for what the OP wants to do, the SB is probably the best choice...

but from a Sonos stand point all he would need is a ZP-80 (or 90) and his iPhone... and then once he rekindled his love for music he could just drop some zp-100's (or 120's) and speakers around the house and have a multi zone audio set up...

oh, and he will need a TV for both... although I am still not clear on what it is exactly you do with said TV....

here is a nice comparison between Sonos & Squeeze...

actually, he could be happy either way...

+1 point for all the extra sarcasm. Which is the type of reply I was contemplating when the OP dismissed all the items that filled the bill.

I'll throw out XBMC.

Use Iphone to surf to web front end - queue up some tunes & enjoy sans tv.

what do you mean by sarcasm? I went out and bought 5 displays, just because the OP said I needed them... I am still waiting on an explanation of why exactly I need them for audio only zones, but I am sure the OP will post some direction soon???

so jparker36, why did I need to buy displays for my audio only zones??? will you ever enlighten us????
