I'm new to the audio world and I wanted to make sure this will work before I buy everything.

I was looking at getting a Sony STR-DN1000 or ONKYO HT-RC160 receiver for a 7.1 system I am installing and I wanted to make sure that these will be able to take a HDMI video input from my computer or PS3 into the receiver and output the HDMI video to my TV while also being able to select an independant optical audio source going into the receiver from either system and play that through my speakers.

I just want to make sure you can select an HDMI input channel and also pick a separate audio input to play from at the same time, thanks.

It should as long as you have assignable optical inputs. Actually being able to do that has more to do with the source. Take the PS3 for example, in order to do what you want, you need to confiugure the PS3 for HDMI video out and optical audio out.

I haven't tried it but, I believe it should work.
