I've been going round-n-round with DirecTV & RCA. I have the DRD440RE

receiver which both DirecTV & RCA claim to be Dolby Digital Compatible. ???It has no optical or coax out??? I've pointed out to them that they are both supplying incorrect information & DirecTV's response was, "Contact a professional installer to have it connected properly." Anybody know of a magic button or hidden panel for this? The manual hints of Dolby Digital possibilities. My best guess is that they built this model with DD except that they decided not to include the necessary jacks.

I have never seen or even heard of a DRD400. The DRD450 is Dolby Digital capable and the DRD420 is not. It is not at all likely that RCA would manufacture a Dolby Digital capable receiver that does not have a digital audio out. All Dolby Digital capable DirecTV receivers I am aware of have an optical audio out. Some have both coaxial and optical.

NO manufacturer would manufacture a Dolby Digital receiver without a digital out.

Sorry, I blew the Model # (must have a few (million) bad memory cells.

The actual Model # (...and I just looked!) is DRD440RE. (Just edited the original post, again I apologize) Here are 2 of the responses I received from DirecTV:

RESPONSE # 1

Thank you for writing. We are sorry to hear of the trouble you have had in finding the manufacturer and model information for Dolby Digital

receivers. In reviewing this information we found that the following

are Dolby Digital capable:

Hughes:

GXCEB0T, GXCEB0TD, HDVR2, HIRD-E1, HIRD-E2, HIRD-E4, HIRD-E6, and

HIRD-E8.

RCA:

DRD420RE, DRD440RE, DRD460RE, DRD480RE, DWD490RE, and DWD495RE.

Sony:

SAT-A4, SAT-A50, SAT-T60, and SAT-W60.

We hope you have found this information helpful. Please let us know if

we can be of any further assistance.

Again, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have

caused you to experience.

RESPONSE #2

Thank you for your inquiry. We apologize for any difficulties you have

had trying to get the Dolby Digital function on your receiver to work.

We have confirmed both in our system and with RCA that your receiver

does have the Dolby Digital capability. For help wiring your receiver

for Dolby Digital sound, please see your owner's manual. If you don't

have an owner's manual, you can find copies of them on our web site at
DIRECTV.com/manuals . You may also wish to contact the company that

manufactured your system. If you'd like a professional installer to

assist you, please check your yellow pages under 'Antennas' or

'Satellite TV' for installers near you.

Thanks again for your time.

...so, now I have a receiver that does not do DD because I picked it off the list that they supplied me. Oh, and their response to me when I asked if they could offer any sort of remedy due to their mis-information:

Thank you for writing back to us with your continued concerns. We are

sorry to hear that your issue has not been resolved as of yet.

Currently, we do not carry nor sell Dolby Digital equipment. This means

that if you want a receiver that has Dolby Digital you must purchase one from a local retailer, online, used, or through the manufacturer. Thank

you again for your time and we hope that you have a great day.

All the Sony models listed are Dolby Digital but that list is not comprehensive. The Hughes HIRD-E1, E2 and E6 are not Dolby Digital capable and some not listed are. The RCA DRD420 is not, I don't know about the 440 but the 450 is and isn't listed. Not a very accurate list to say the least. I doubt if you have any recourse against DirecTV but I don't know.
