Wanted to know if you have a receiver that sends out dolby ex or dts es signals. What happens to the extra signal in a 5.1 set up? Does the signal get sent to the left/right back speakers or is it lost?
Only a DTS-ES discreet recording has an actual separate rear channel, all others are deriving the rear channel from the surround channels, so lack of a 6th speaker does not mean that you are losing any information. A DTS-ES discreet recording will fall back to a 5.1 channel setup in a system that does not decode or use the rear surround channel. So basically, no, you are not losing any audio information by not having a 6.1/7.1 setup. the only thing you would lack is the placement of sound directly behind you.
