Dolby IIx and DVD Audio/SACD

768 Views 17 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Franchot
I was under the impression that receivers with Dolby IIx were able to spread the multichannel input of DVD Audio/SACD over 7 speakers.

Which, if any receivers can do this?

Does the Pioneer 1040TX do this?

I believe the H/K 435 and 635 can. Maybe MCode can confirm this. :D
The Pioneer can with 24/96 dts encoded dvd-a's or dts encoded cds. However, no receiver can with SACDs or Dolby Digital DVD-a's as those will only play by using the multichannel inputs on the receiver (from the analog multichannel outputs on your dvd player or creative labs audigy 2 sound card)--they won't pass a digital signal to the receiver, and only 5.1 channels are passed from the multichannel outs of the players.

SACD's will not pass a digital stream from any player to any amplifier, the path out of the player has to be analog or it won't play (you'll just hear static).
I have been reading the Integra Research RDC-7.1 online manual, and it does accomplish this digitally via the iLink connection. It is unclear how SACD is processed, but could be converted to PCM for this. The RDC-7.1 is not a receiver. I have not looked at the Onkyo or Integra receiver manuals to see how the receiver options handle this.

One other note, the SACD standard I'm speaking to is the current 1.3. The new standard due out sometime later this year (2.0) will allow some devices to pass the digital signal. I believe Denon's Ilink is one, but I'm unsure of the others. Currently however, I belive SACD is analog out only.
H/K 435/635 (via analog inputs), Pioneer Elite 59TXi (via analog or iLink) and B&K AVR 507 (S1 and S2 via analog inputs).

Sherwood Newcastle x65 series is due for a firmware upgrade soon that will include this capability. Could be others as mentioned here as well.

All of the above will perform this with both DVD-A and SACD.
The Pioneer Elite players and receivers with I-link WILL pass the digital signal from SACD and at least the 59TXi will overlay DPLIIx on top of 5.1.

I've tried to get DPLIIX to work with my SACDs and DVD-As on my Pioneer Elite 56TXi, but I've been unsuccessful. I'm using i-link for a true digital path for both formats, but the receiver will not allow anything other than the SACD multi-channel and DVD-A multi-channel (5.1) options. (Or 2.0 or 2.1 if it's a stereo SACD/DVD-A.)

This is the way I always thought that SACDs and DVD-As were made to function and that you could not override or change their 5.1 soundfields with additional DSPs or Dolby Pro Logic. Am I confused on this?
Thanks all for your replies.

Interesting...guess I'll check out HK.
I'm currently listening to The Corrs "In Blue" DVD-A disc w/ PLIIx enabled on my Yamaha RX-V1400.

How did I do it you ask?...

Pretty simple. I have the receiver connected to my computer. I Have a Soundblaster Audigy 4 Pro (Audigy 2 series will work as well), now using the digital coax connection, I'm playing the DVD-A through WinDVD 6 Platinum & NOT Creative's own DVD-A player. Creative's player limits playback to analog output only.

The digital signal is limited to 2 channel PCM but I can apply whatever sound field I want w/ the receiver.

If I want true 5.1 DVD-A playback I use the analog outs from the A4 to the Yamaha.

The Onkyo TX-NR1000, Integra DTR-10.5 and Integra Research RDC7.1 with the iLink card will all play DVD-A and SACD discs via an entirely digital path through the iLink connection with an iLink equipped DVD player such as the Onkyo SP1000, Integra DPS-10.5 and Integra Research RDV-1.1.

If you are listening to any 2-channel dvd-audio or sacd, you can always use the regular analog connection from your dvd player, and then apply any processing available in your receiver. What comes out of your regular analog outputs on the dvd player is the same as what comes out of the right and left multichannel outs on the dvd player.

Having said that, DVD-Audio and SACD have just about breathed their last breath. So get whatever discs you want now, before they bite the dust like mini-disc and DCC.

This is NOT TRUE of all players. My universal player (a Marantz DV6400) will NOT output any hi-res info via the stereo L/R pair, only via the MCH output. When I used it as a two channel player, I had to connect the F/L and F/R of the MCH output to my 2 channel rig in order to get SACD output (didn't play any DVD-As during that brief time, but I tested them and it was the same).

You CAN however, connect to any two channel analogue input on your receiver from the player and apply processing to the signal in that fashion.

Unfortunately, Pioneer did not include this capability in the 56TXi. It's only possible with the 59TXi, 49TXi and 49TX (analog inputs only on 49TX). Of course, the latter 2 don't have PLIIx, but THX Ultra2 can be layered over DVD-A/SACD for 7.1 channels of playback, and the result is very good.

It makes no sense as to why Pioneer didn't include this option in the 56TXi over iLink.

Thanks, bubbawilly, for the information! I'll give THX Ultra2 a try to see how I like it.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, but the 56TXi doesn't have THX Ultra2, and it doesn't have the ability to extend DVD-A/SACD from 5.1 to 7.1 at all. Only the 49 and 59 series have Ultra2.

Oops. Guess I WON'T try it and will have to live with 5.1 as it is. (Thanks for posting back!)
