Don, dont shoot me.. Mural behind my Stewart screen!

Finally, HT room completed. Projector is up.

My 100 inch 16x9 diagonal elecric Stewart screen is going up this weekend. My wife suggested she paints a mural (she's an artist) on the wall exactly where the white image area will end up. The image will be in matt paint using black, navy and dark grey tones. Probably a classic cartoon Batman scene or something similar. (ceiling is matt black as is the screen wall while the other three walls will be a very dark navy blue, almost black)

The idea being that in 'relaxing mode' when the screen is up, there will be certain spotlights angled towards the mural/painting which hopefully will look very nice.

Question is, how badly will this painting affect the image once the light seeps through and bounces on the back of the screen?

Dear Uncle Eric,

I am not sure what model you have. If its a Grayhawk, it has to be the first one in the UK. The GrayHawk is 100 percent opaque.

If your screen is a Studiotek or Videomatte you still won't have a problem

as both of these screen fabrics are over 97 percent opaque. Let me do the math. Let say that 3 percent of the light hits the back wall. The wall is dark and at best less than 50 percent will be reflected back towards the back of the screen. Now only 3 percent of that light will get back to the viewing side. That means in the worst case your contrast will be

diminished by .045 percent. Eric, enjoy the art work.

Don

Don,

Thank you kindly for answering back. My screen is your studiotek 130 material (I have CRT). Phew, you've really put my mind at ease. Now I can go ahead and commision my wife http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif to do the artwork.

I will post some pictures in due course to show how it looks. (hopefully, better than a blank empty wall)

Now...where are all those DC comics from my childhood........

Best wishes

Eric

Don,

Does this mean there is no real need to put up black velvet behind your StudioTek?

Dear Set.

I think putting Black Velvet behind the screen would pretty much be a waste. You would get a much better return on your investment by placing the same velvet on the wall around the screen in the viewers sight lines.

The perceived contrast would be better and in some cases it will help dampen "indirect" ambient light.

Regards,

Don
