I have an older Sony CRT projector 1031. I would like to install a double. Can anyone give me some suggestions on what type would be good. I have a limited budget.

Thanks.

I don't know my Sony models, but if your pj will accept doubled output, the older DVDO Iscans work quite nicely, and are very easy to setup. I have a Pro - which accepts 480i thru component in; you can get the older VIIs for even less, but they only accept composite and S-video. I used the Pro with my Barco for a year, it made a world of difference.

If you are looking for something that allows you to input "anything" video related into your PJ the safest thing would be to check Ebay for a DVDO iScan Plus line doubler. Check Ebay for listings.

For simple DVD viewing try to score a Avia DVD player. Ebay will be your best source for this. Prices will range from $32 and up. If you can get one for $50 or less you are doing ok. This is a nice unit that allows direct hookup to your Sony (Provided you have a DB25 > HD15 converter) without having to add in a sync converter (Extron) to give your 1031 a negative polarity signal. I am using one on mine and it works just dandy.

If HDTV is your thing look for a Samsung SIR-TS360 STB which has video inputs so you can add on a DVD player through the unit. There are other types of STB boxes that have video inputs besides the one I listed but you will have to read up on them. Some units will not output the video in signals out through the VGA port. Be aware that you WILL need an Extron unit to convert the signal to negative sync. And of course you must make sure you DO NOT select the 720p signal otherwise you will fry the Sony.

Lastly a HTPC will perform all the things listed above with the right components.

It would help if you could be more specific about the limit in your budget. For the sake of simplicity I would just get a DVDO unit and be done with it. Not the best solution, but a good and safe one.

EDIT: Marshall you beat me to it with the DVDO suggestion. The Sony he is refering to will do 540p/1080i

I also have the dvdo pro unit. It does a nice job with regular tv signals and tivo output as well as dvd. Picked it up on ebay for under 200 dollars. It outputs 480p only.

I have had the Plus, Pro, and Ultra's, they all work well, the Ultra obviously being more versatile. If you cant buy a cheap used one, check out AVtoolbox. Their products do a pretty good job. If you have about 5-6 hundred to spend, maybe opt for an old Lumagen vision, with its customizable resolutions, you can adjust resolution 2 lines at a time. It would also scale to higher resolutions, if, but probably when you upgrade. Let me know if you need a 25 pin cable to hook that up.
