I just got this in my inbox today. It is from the "Whats New Now" newsletter from Ziff-Davis:

Blu-ray Claims Success, Loses War

Talk about sticking your head in the sand! While the back booths

from China were showing off low-cost HD DVD drive prototypes,

LG demonstrated a combo player, and movie studios signed onto

the hybrid HD DVD/Blu-ray disc, the Blu-ray consortium claimed

it had won the war, that HD DVD was dead, and that they were

taking a victory lap. Whoops. We've got details on what the

consortium said: Read it for a particularly sweet example of a

load of hooey. We've also got an update on the new hybrid DVD

format, with details on which major retailers will stock it. And

if you want to know more about LG's dual-drive system, you can

read all about it here: It's not perfect, but it is certainly a

step in the right direction.

HD DVD Comes Out Swinging

On the other side of the battle, the folks bringing you HD DVD

were optimistic as well-perhaps with more reason. The other

camp rolled out a bevy of new backers, promising new hardware

in 2007, along with second-generation players and set-top boxes,

and (finally) an HD DVD burner. Read all about what they had to

say, here.

"HD DVD is also touting their online community, where you can create bookmarks of your favorite movie scenes and share them with people in that community. For example, you can select your favorite scenes from a movie, access the HD DVD "online community", and have someone from the community download those scenes directly into their HD DVD player. Memory will be built-in to these set top players so you can save these bookmarks."

Oddball feature. "Hey AVS here is my favorite clip from (insert movie)! Reply: Crickets

All pretty much news we know though, but thanks.

Ok...

Just to be clear here.... I sit in the HD-DVD camp... I hate to see this mis-info get attention...

So.... Here goes....

The TotalHD Disc will only be used by Warner and New Line..... No additional studio commitment at this point.

The LG dual player currently has no support from the HD-DVD camp. The player currently does not support IME nor the menuing software.... At CES, no one I know of actually saw the dual player play a HD-DVD... Just the Blu-ray....

Correct. The LG player should be a resounding failure as it should be. The slight on the HD DVD side with the half-backed implementation won't win any fans and with the PS3, or Sammy or indeed most blu players less (except Pioneer) - it's a no winner.

Hope it fails and makes LG reconsider their half-arse implementation.

Bottom line is that when you really look at it, HD DVD in fact had a much better CES than Blu-Ray.

* Blu-Ray made ridiculous claims "Umm, yippy we won! Please believe us?" and announced some titles. No real new hardware announcements. That was it, and that was all they could have possibly done. They still have 'entry-level' standalone players with high-end prices.

* HD DVD on the other hand has announced increased disc capacity (will be better than Blu-Ray) and new major support from CE companies from entry level Chinese/Taiwanese manufacturers to higher end Onkyo and Meridian. Even Alpine will be making HD DVD for your vehicle.

I didn't think it was possible to spread this much misinformation in one post. . .

Read that post. I've had half a dozen or so SD DVDs come cracked from both Netflix and BB in the past year and a half.

Still, it's worth discussion.

The English language fails us at times. This should have "read" more like...

I've "read" that post...

What in the post was incorrect? Similar points were made in the insider's forum linked in another thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...&page=24&pp=30 . The BDA trumpeted new title releases because it had nothing else to talk about. It did come on strong, and it's easy to think there must be something there. In terms of hardware, though, which is what the show is actually about, the BDA had nothing to talk about while the HD camp announced new manufacturers, cheaper players, and (for the sake of PR), potentially greater storage capacity. Some enthusiasts on message boards (like me) might have been taken in initially by the BDA talk, but it actually appears to have been a pretty exciting CES for HD DVD. Of course, greater studio support would complete the picture.
