Don't know if this is the place to find help with this problem, but I'm gonna try anyway...

I'm involved with the showing of DVDs in one of the lecture halls at my university. The PC with DVD drive is hooked up to the PA system, but there's a problem with the audio: the center channel seems to get lost when playing movies with surround sound. Dialogue is almost totally inaudible, while music and effects are loud and clear. The problem is present with both PowerDVD or Media Player. I've checked the audio settings to make sure it's set up for a 2-speaker configuration.

Any help would be much appreciated.

It is not an equipment issue. Everything is working fine. It is the fact that 5.1 surround sound mixes downmix to 2.0 poorly. That is why you some times see 2.0 mixes as well as the 5.1 mixes on a DVD. The only way I'm aware of to 'solve' it is to rig up a cheap DD receiver to play the centre channel.
