I was originally considering a infinite baffle install into our house, however after giving it some thought, I've decided a more traditional design might be best. I'm not sure how long we'll stay in this house and am afraid a potential buyer might not see the beauty in a bass pumping hole in the floor.

So, I was wondering what driver you guys would recommend. The room is approx 3200sq ft, give or take. I was looking at soundsplinters rl-p18 or rl-s15. As well as Fi's Q18. Just wondering if any of these would work well, if you had any other recommendations or if two drivers will likely be needed. Material is tv, ps3 and movies mostly, but music also gets played. I'm shooting for clean reference levels.

As always, thanks.

"clean reference" will get lots of different suggestions around here.

many argue that home subs, such as the ones that you mention are great for digging deep, but not so great from the upper end of the bass range.

others argue that pro audio subs, which are at their best toward the upper end of the bass range, aren't quite as capable of digging deep.

the only subs that i can note which are pretty good at both are the jbl w1500h (i'm not sure if you can even buy them) and the lms ultra (i'm not sure if you can even buy them either), though i am sure there are others.

"compromise" type drivers might include the bms 18n850 or ae speakers td18+, if you want a pro audio tilt, while the maelstrom is a perennial favorite for a home sub tilt. there are a couple from jl audio that are great as well, but they tend not to be as bang for your buck.

the key idea is that there is no "optimal", only different tradeoffs. finding the tradeoffs that make you most happy is what we are all here to do.

i'd suggest a bms 18n850 in each corner in a 5 cubic footer sealed enclosure. this will give you very deep extension, help smooth room modes, provide insane power handling, and a reasonably tight upper bass (good punch). with proper amps, it will cleanly blow past "reference spl" no problem.

if that is too much money, try using two either front-middle/back-middle of your room or one on each side in the middle of the wall. this would be reference level, but without much gas left in the tank for higher spl.

make sure that you have some way of fixing your in-room eq. the odds of getting reasonably flat response without any eq using two subs are about 1 in 10.

good luck. i hope that you will post a build thread whatever your decision.

Budget wise I'd like to hover around $600 for the drivers. I was looking pretty hard at the Mach 5 mj18's, or their ixl. But if I could achieve the levels I'm looking for (movie theater level) out of a single, higher quality sub that would be great since it would save some floor space. As for the subs freq range. I'll likely stick with bookshelve style mains and would have them crossed over somewhere around 80hz so I'd need a sub setup capable of reaching up to them.

Also, I just realized that I said the room was 3200sq ft, I wish! Our whole house isn't even that big. I, of coarse, meant 3200cu ft and only 400sq ft.

None, they are all Greek to me. That's why I pose the question to you guys. My only two "specs" have been price and diameter.

I looked at the 18n850 you suggested and unless I just found it at a horribly priced place, it's beyond my budget.

However the td18h+ might be do-able. Just build one now and one later.

Guy,

If you check post 13 on the below thread you will see where John from AE talking about putting together a package with regards to AV15's, PR and cabinet(s). He does not state the price he would be looking for but you can always PM him about it if this maybe something you would be interested in.

There was a sub GTG at Warp's where everyone really liked that setup. You can probably find his thread around here also.

the 18n850 costs less than the td18h+.

James

great idea. that is a strong suggestion if more emphasis on the bottom end is required. i'm not sure what john j. is pricing the package at either.

Thanks for the link. I could do the bms, build one now, then another later. I would prefer some fairly deep extension though. I pm'd John J about the kit to see what his pricing is. Currently I have a 12" eclipse sw8200 and it does great, but it's in a much smaller room. I don't think it could keep up in the larger living room.

I appreciate your time and recommendations guys.

Well I pm'd John and haven't gotten any response. I've checked and noticed that he was last signed in today. So, unless I can get some info out of him does anyone have any further recommendations?

Two 12" ShivaX ported enclosures tuned to 17hz in about 6.5 cuft each

Drivers cost $300...DIYcable.com just dropped the price!

Behringer EP2500 about $299 street price..........

That'll get things done and portable so you an take it with you. Two subs are almost always better than 1. I'd shop carefully for the Behringer, you can probobly find em for around $250. This would leave a few bucks for a Behringer Mic2200 unit which will level match your AVR to the Pro style amp, give you a channel of adjustable parametric eQ and a selectable high pass filter for protecting a ported subwoofer below tuning.

I already have a ep2500 amp. I use one channel of it to power my current eclipse sw8200. I've honestly considered just buying a second eclipse. It's an excellent lms driver. Current reciever is a yamaha RX-V663.

And thanks guys, I'll try to keep tabs on the av15h. It still peaks my interest.
