Hi,

I have played with some VCR Software recently and it turned out that none of the commercial programs (PowerVCR etc.) work on my machine except dScaler. Recording is fine apart from the file sizes in uncompressed mode ;-) Now I have started playing around with some Codecs. Unfortunately I haven´t found a codec yet that does a propper work :-( Can anyone make a suggestion here or are there other programs that are able to store AVI-Files from a capture card....

Thanks for help.

I have been fiddling with some Vcr software too.

Have you tried Snasptream ? I found it to quite good and practical as a VCR. Too bad it wont properly support tuning to french channels on my WinTV.

As for codecs, IMHO good choices are :

pegasus Mjpeg (mjpeg.com)

Divx 3.11 low motion

With these codecs, you can record real time at full resolution on a reasonable PC. However when it comes to simultaneously viewing and recording (true timeshifting), it seems difficult to go beyond half size (half X, half Y). And I have yet to find a program which would work correctly for timeshifting.

DScaler's timeshifting support is yet very flaky at best.

If you are looking just for simple VCR functionnality, you could try FreeVCR.
