My situation:

1) DST-3000, Toshiba 4:3 HD-ready set

2) Watching US Open Tennis on Cincinnati channel 31 (DTV)

3) Set to 1080i output mode, Letterbox.

Why am I getting black vertical bars on the sides as well as the expected horizontal gray bars at the top and bottom? I thought Letterbox mode was supposed to fill the screen horizontally? Could it be that the US Open was not being originated in HD?

I get the same on my Sony 4:3 set. The programming is being broadcast in 4:3. With a 16:9 set you would only be getting the bars on the left/right sides (no top/bottom). I get this with any digital broadcasts that are not sent out in 16:9. With my TV (Sony KV-32XBR400) and DirecTV receiver (ProScan PSHD-105) combo there is nothing that can be done about this when viewing thru component input. You can try S-video and see if you get a full screen (but not HDTV) 4:3 picture.

Thanks for the reply. I actually answered my own question after I posted it. The US Open will be in HD next weekend for the semis and finals.
